2001 Harley Davidson FLSTF Fat Boy speedometer not working @

LiliLady needs to get out riding A.S.A.P. After cleaning and polishing my '01 Fat Boy & checking that everything was working b4 ride. My SPEEDO stopped working, (blackout #1) on the ride. Pulled over to check it out. At the same time, I noticed that my FRONT blinkers weren't working either (blackout #2). Back blinker lights OK. Is this problem related to each other? Don't think so but hopeful. Can I get some ideas on a fix other than the obvious? Need to get back out riding. Missing GOOD rides every day since. Thanx LiliLady

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Contaminated or faulty speed sensor.
2. Faulty turn signal module.
3. Corroded, broken or loose connector pins/sockets in the wire harness between the speedometer and the ECM or TSSM and the sensor.
4. The speedometer unit has failed.
5. Speedometer instrument fuse has blown.

SOURCE: After cleaning and polishing my '01 Fat Boy

The problem is most likely related to the speed sensor down on the tranny. Most likely it got wet and either shorted out or needs cleaned, but most likely it needs replaced, Do you have a Factory Manual as well as the Electronic diagnostics manual. You can put the bike into diagnostic mode and it will tell you what the problem is. If it is the speed sensor that crapped out . That would cause the speedo to illuminate, but not read anything. Also, it would cause the Speed/RPM cancel function to fail. Does the speedo illuminate? If not, you either have a dead speedo, or a short to its power. The only other thing is the ignithion switch, if water got into this and caused a short that would also cause this issue, try wiggling it around and see if it makes better contact and see if that helps, might just have to let it sit in the sun for a while and dry out and left over moisture. I assume you checked all the fuses?

A couple of questions though. Do the turn signals cancel when you bank turn the bike? There are two ways that the bike cancels the signals. Either via Speed/RPM ratio, or via the bank angle sensor inside the TSSM (Turn Signal / Security Module).

Adjust rear suspension on a 2001 harley davidson fat boy

If the rear shocks are completely stock and have not had a lowering kit installed then the ride height is non-adjustable. You could adjust the tension or the "ride comfort" with specialized tools. As any part of a vehicle's suspension directly affects the motorcycle's operation and its safety I'd suggest letting qualified people help you with your motorcycle.

MY HARLEY FAT BOY 2002 SPEEDOMETER FACE NEEDS TO REPLACED

You're better of to simply purchase a new speedo. There are places that can replace the face in your speeometer but this work is expensive. The service is primarily for restoring antique speedometers. Just buy a new speedo.

Good Luck

01 fatboy speedometer does not register. Power is there, just not counting miles/speed. Not fuel injected system.

Remove speed sensor in G/Box (behind starter motor) clean the end of sensor as it will have metal filling on it which can stop the sensor from working. If no luck the sensor it self would have failed which is very common
