You say you've tried an OS upgrade...meaning you went to this site: http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=237&tab=downloads&skip=true and downloaded the firmware update for the synth and followed the procedures outlined there?
Also check the manual (if you don't have one, a digital copy is here:
http://media.rolandus.com/manuals/GR-33_OM.pdf) and see if there's
anything there in the troubleshooting section that makes sense (I'm not
100% sure how you're all hooked up and what you're doing, so I'm not
even sure what to look for).
If nothing makes sense or sounds like it could
be what you're experiencing, I think you're correct in suspecting a corrupted ROM chip. Unfortunately I'm not seeing any parts sections to the Roland website, so I would have to suggest taking it to a dealer unless you can get some information from Roland's tech support line.
Hi daveihde,
Can you please elaborate , what you meant by freaked out?
This is to confirm whether the device is actually playing the sawtooth waveform in a way that is abnormal or it's normal for this model to play sawtooth waveform sounds in that manner.
Please compare it with an identical device and then find out the difference , sometimes a good servicing , a cleaning of the circuit will help you out to solve the problem, in addition to system reset.
Hope this helps ..:)
If the circuit has malfunctioned, or the ROM software has been corrupted due to a hardware malfunction , then you can expect such problem ,
I would recommend you to please use the accurate power supply cable along with this device and make sure you are connecting this device directly to your power supply without a voltage stabilizer , as in many cases the voltage stabilizer or UPS is a hurdle for pure sounds with high level of required output.

It's as if the waveform or the engine that is playing those waveforms is corrupted. It jumps pitch, switches timbre abruptly, sounds nothing like it should. I have the same basic sounds in my XV-2020, so know what it should sound like. Most of the emulative samples work, but anything synthy, or with drums is unrecognizable. Its as if the ROM for that bank is bad, yet the waveforms in the other bank are good. Wondering if there could be a chip to reseat, but assume its all soldered on and doesn't look roughed up.
One other thing I should add, it came without a power supply. I have some experience with electronics and believe I have a functional equivalent in place, but I've seen devices freak out with bad power. Doesn't make sense why some sounds would work and others don't though. I would also expect to see irratic response or display issues across the board.
Have tested my unit with a friend's identical factory power supply and no improvement. Took apart and reseated ribbon cables, looked for cold solder joints, etc. I expect it is a corrupted ROM chip, which are all soldered on as far as I can tell. Done the factory reset and OS upgrade, so feels like I am running out of options, other than a costly repair at the factory. Anybody with more ideas?
