Troy-bilt Pony stalls as soon as a load is on the engine. Just had the carborator cleaned, but did not fix the problem. Starts okay, runs and travels okay, but as soon as the tines hit the soil, the engine stops. Any ideas? Caveat: this tiller was underwater during the 2008 Midwest floods. It was cleaned and ran okay after that for one season.

Sounds like one of the pressure switches is bad wire each direct one at a time to find out but do not leave it that way.

SOURCE: Troy Bilt Tiller tines do not engage

You likely have a clutch problem, never saw one that a simple adjustment would fix. I'd take off the tiller (there are two bolts that hold the tiller portion to the transmission, and check to make sure the clutch is sliding in and out. My hunch is either the lever is loose on the shaft or the allen-head little bolt that they use to shift the clutch has come out. Be sure to grease the clutch while you're in there.

This should be covered in your owners manual. Shame on them if they didn't mention this.

My troy built pony will not stay goning

If your Troy-Bilt Pony riding lawn mower is having trouble staying running, there are a few things you can check:
  1. Fuel: Make sure the fuel tank is full and that there is fresh, clean gasoline in the tank. If the gasoline is old or contaminated, it can cause the engine to stall or run poorly.
  2. Air filter: Check the air filter and clean or replace it if it is dirty or clogged. A dirty air filter can restrict air flow to the engine, causing it to run poorly or stall.
  3. Spark plug: Inspect the spark plug and replace it if it is worn or fouled. A worn or fouled spark plug can cause the engine to run poorly or not start at all.
  4. Carburetor: Check the carburetor and clean it if it is dirty or clogged. A dirty or clogged carburetor can prevent the engine from getting the proper fuel and air mixture, causing it to stall or run poorly.
  5. Fuel lines: Check the fuel lines and make sure they are clear and free of debris. A clogged fuel line can prevent the engine from getting the proper fuel, causing it to stall or run poorly.
If none of these solutions work, it may be best to take your mower to a professional for further diagnosis and repair.

Troy Bilt pony riding mower, starts, runs for a short period then chokes out. Changed air filter, spark plug cleaned kill switch under seat, still does the same thing.

Check and probably replace fuel filter. Then carb will need to be cleaned/rebuilt. Sounds like the needle valve is sticking or the float is sticking.

I recommend cleaning the filter with gasoline if its foam or replacing it if its paper. If this doesn't fix the problem you should remove the carburetor (in between the air filter box and the engine) and cleaning it thoroughly with carb cleaner from your local parts store.

Sounds like you need to take the carb. apart and clean it. I like to use a Den Tek Brush, (used for cleaning teeth), to clean the small ports in carb. they work great for this job. Make sure to either clean or replace the small screen in thcarb. as well.

Tilller will not run

Get the model # and serial # off of the sticker. Got to the Troy Bilt site and use the owners manual link. Need to leave off the last 3 numbers of the model #.

If that site does not have the manual, I've found them on the MTD site. I enter only the first 2 numbers of the model # and then hunt for my manual from the list.

If all else fails, you can call Troy Bilt at their # provided on the site.

Hope this helps.
