Not sure which model you have but there are usually screws on each side of the magazine where it is held on to the nose. Remove those screws and the one that holds the bracket at the rear of the gun body. Once you remove the magazine you should be able to see how the spring is held into place. If you have the model number you can find a tool diagram for it here;

How to fix the recoil

first you need to remove the recoil from the motor, usually 3 to 4 screws or bolts. then look on the underside where the rope pulley is and see if you can tell if the spring is broken ( one end breaks off 99% of the time) if that's the case you will have to replace the spring first.check that out and let me know.

The recoil does not recoil

Depending on engine you remove the housing, underneath you will see a pulley in which the cord goes around. Remove it, a couple of things could be there, spring has broken, easily replaced an not expensive. Could be trash or broken cord. This is an easy job dont panic follow instructions on new part. More than anything else its a coiled spring. Not much else could be wrong an if it is you can spot it. . You may need to replace pulley if it has a crack in it. They have long since quit making them from metal now. Pulley or spring or both is your problem.

Have champion 3500 watt generator recoil pull cord wont recoil HELP

need to take the recoil off the engine and check for a broken recoil spring, depending on the engine if it is a honda, they sell a replacement recoil unit, anything else and you will have to get creative....try tapping on the recoil with your palm and see if it trys to rewind, if no resistance or movement when bumping is a good indicator of a broken recoil spring....

Pull string won;t recoil

The recoil spring has broken. These are available at any lawn mower parts supply store. The process of changing the spring is tedious but can be done by anyone with average mechanical ability. If you removed the recoil assy (and air shroud if it is riveted on) and took the assembly to a Lawn Mower Repair shop usually they will change out the spring while you wait. If you can't get the recoil assy off take the mower with you to the repair shop. Again most shops will fix it while you if wait but if they are very busy usually they are serviced within 24 hours.

If you do attempt this yourself check in the tips section of FixYa on how to change the recoil stater rope after replacement of the spring.

I highly recommend you replace the pull rope at the time of the recoil spring replacement.

One final note... there is a possibility that the pull rope spool has been damaged where the spring attaches.

Thanks for using FixYa,

Kelly

Pull start on my Toro snowthrower (snow master 20 - model #38020) it wont recoil itself. I removed the starter housing but can not figure out how to get the pulley and starter recoil spring out/off of the...

Its basically the same....best bet is to just buy the new pull start mechanism...they are pretty cheap, and they go bad on those units all the time.

Broken recoil spring

A new spring comes wound tight enough to be dropped into place in the starter housing (Easiest).

I invert and secure the housing and rewind the spring large coil to small (need eye protection, both hands and no women around work area!). I'm right handed so i tension the spring enough to insert it inside the previous coil while holding what has already been installed with my left about 180° from my right hand. The tension will hold the spring in the housing once completely inserted. Then bend slightly the inner most part to engage the starter spool. It will require about 2 turns of pretension to retract properly.
If you're lucky you can pull the cord out enough for a pretension then slightly raise and add the withdrawn cord to the spool.

Both methods require about 2 turns of pretension to rewind the cord when pulled.
