Replacement of glass top

I shattered the glasstop on my stove. I need to know how to replace it I have a GE Sprectra stove with the glass top broken and am considering ordering that part to replace ourselves. Is it possible? I also wondered what the black sealant is around the top.

Check your warranty in the back of your use and care book. If the unit was manufactured prior to 1/1/06 it may have a five year part (not labor) warranty as long as you did not physically abuse it. The glass top comes as an assembled top (glass, the black seal, and the metal frame holding it)
Disconnect power. remove screws under the front edge of cook top. lift cook top and remove crossbars holding burners up against glass top. Unhook cook top / frame assemble. Install new top in reverse order.

Just a note when you're doing this... when you open up the top, put a towel across each side so that when you drop a clip, it doesn't go down the side between the oven and the outside wall. If it does, hope that it goes all the way to the bottom where you can get at it by removing the bottom drawer. If you put the towel all the way across the oven box before you start taking things apart, you also won't have to worry about where little tiny screws go when you drop them... and, you will drop them! ;-)

Also, the old tops had a reinforcement bar that the ground was attached to. The new ones don't. There's a tiny hole on the flange of one of the right hand burner holes... that's where the ground is supposed to go on the new top. You WILL need a smaller self tapping screw than the original one.

And, forget having a helper... get something to prop the lid open with that won't fall if you raise the lid a little while you're working on it. Helper will just get in the way and can't hold it still enough while you''re trying to man handle those tiny little clips and screws that hold the burners in place.

I need to replace the glass cooktop on my Maytag electric stove

  1. Open oven door and remove two screws that secure top.
  2. Lift up front and slide forward about 8 inches so that you can disconnect two wire couplings.
  3. Place on table upside down(I put newspaper down to catch the broken shards of glass) and remove burner unit (1piece, 4 screws).
  4. Place old burners on new stovetop in the same position as original.
  5. Remove 4 white plastic shims (round) from old stovetop and put on new stovetop.
  6. Tighten all screws and then sit it back on stove (two front tabs fit into slots) and then insert screws into holes and tighten.
  7. Took about 20 minutes, including vacuuming broken glass from inside burners and cleaning grease form crevices between burners and old stovetop.
  8. Wrap old stovetop in the newspapers that are underneath it and place it all in a plastic garbage bag to avoid any broken glass from falling out.

Broken selector switch

TURN OFF CIRCUIT BREAKER. Lift out cooktop, remove all machine screws holding the glass frame. Remove plastic knobs and lift glass top straight up. Make sure rubber gromits are not ripped or torn. Unscrew the small screws on the selector switch and then lift up and tilt over the small aluminum chasis holding the switches to expose the wiring connections. Pull off the wires and pull out the defective switch. Replacre switch, connect wires, re-seat switch chasis, and secure switch with screws. Carefully drop in the glasstop lining up the switch shafts and the rubber grommets. Secure the top with machine screws and drop back in the cutout.

Broken glass top for my gas stove

You can buy just the glass for your glasstop stove. I too need to replace my glass...I have a whilpool electric glasstop. Its not cheap...may just buy new stove. I priced just the glass for my whilpool at the cheapest I can find for $320.00. Thats a lot. Mind you its not the elements under the glass..its just the glass! So...idk bout you, but a whole new stove might be my best option. If you want to price the glass for your model just keyword search your number and brand of stove and type replacement glass. GOODLUCK! :)

Glasstop stove chiped

Keep using the range if the glass is cracked all the way through it will appear quickly. Then the glass top will have to be replaced . There is no fix for the glass top. You might get lucky and nothing will happen.

Replacement of glass top

Unplug first! Find the screws that hold the cooktop to the range. Usually in the front just above the oven door when it is closed on the underside. This should release the cooktop. The burners and wiring may have to be removed. You can order the part at sears.com.

Replacing a glass cook top

I have the replacement cook top that you need (part #WB56T10165). I work for a GE Appliance distributor and will sell you the part for WAY less than list price. The item is an unopened, genuine GE replacement part.

Let me know if you're interested.
