I have a Kohler K-304 shower mixing valve which is several years old but is only used occasionaly. Worked fine at first, but now it will not provide any hot water- no water when all the the way to hot. Have adjusted the stops to allow for maximum hot water. I have remove to the mixer cap to see if there is any blockage- there is none. I have not attempted to remove the pressure balance unit. What do you suggest?

Unfortunately my shut off is a distance from the shower mixer and I am working alone. When I blow through the cold water side of the pressure balance unit there is no resistance, but when I blow through the hot water side it is completely restricted. Would that mean the problem is in the pressure balance unit? Thanks.

Yes this was very helpful. Now I know that I have to replace the pressure balance unit which I understand is an expensive part. Possiblly I can get Kohler to provide under their lifetime warranty....

Hi,
The problem is that the pressure balance unit is stuck...therefore no hot water...it is not sensing the cold water pressure....so it will not allow hot water to flow...
The lack of use is actually a bad thing as the rubber and such can adhere to the metal and stick the unit...
You maybe able to free it up, but it probably will never work correctly...
I would just replace the pressure balance unit to be sure that it is working correctly and safely...

Thanks. Having cold and hot solved the same problem for me!

I think you are going to have to finish disassembly to find what it is that is blocking the hot side. I would guess a bit of rust or mineral build up. This is made worse by lack of use. If you havn't already try turning the water supply on very slowly while you have the valve most of the way torn down so you know you have water to that point. Best of luck and thank you.

It sounds to me like the check valve inside the balance unit is stuck shut. I have checked for repair parts but all I can find is almost the price of a new valve. Sorry I can not be of more help. Thank you.

Installed a new Kohler mixing valve and when the other shower is running, water will flow out of the new Kohler shower head.

There's something blocking it sometimes if you turn the water off in your home and turn it back on sometimes calcium from the pipes break loose and cause blockage in new style washerless valve assemblies.

I have a single handle kohler bath tub faucet I am not getting any cold water out. i have taken this apart and found nothing that i can see that would impede the flow of water ?is the mixer valve at the...

If the faucet was working before and then just stopped, it is the mixing valve or a clogged supply line.
turn the water off and remove the mixing valve. Turn the water on and see if you have good flow from both hot and cold ports inside the faucet.
Caution- this procedure can get messy, close the shower curtain or door.
Call Kohler and ask for a new mixing valve for free.

Very little cold water from shower valve

If this is a new installation and has always beenj this way, then I would suspect that there may be an obstruction in the cold water line leading to the valve. Or something stuck in the valve at the point where the cold water is connected. If someone has worked on thius valve recently , then I would suspect that they got the valve cartridge in backwards, If the catridge is not placed in the valve correctly the opperation is messed up.

Very little cold water, lots of hot from kohler shower valve

Probably some pipe rust clogged the exit.
If u have pretty low pressure on one or both, hot and cold water, try keep force closed by hand the water exit at shower pipe, then start both cold and warm water gradually as much as u can keep it closed with the hand.
The pressure of the water will try "escape thru the clogged pipe and hopefully unlock that debris or rust!
The hot water pressure going back thru the cold water pipe might unclog that debris.
Just a simple fix which many times works as a charm..
Otherwise if this is not fixing, try close both water from main service valve.
Then unscrew the secondary shower valves and manually clean them or replace if very damaged.

Replaced shower valve. still drips from tub spout

The cartridge has 2 or 3 o-ring type seals around it that feed the water through, it picks up both hot and cold and mixes them. Some cartridges are replaced as one, some you have to replace the seals, just take the faucet info to the hardware store and match it up. I think the diverter is for the shower. It sends the water up instead of out.

Kohler K-9511-BN MasterShower Shower Arm & Diverter Doesn't Work

As a helpful hint , on these models, When installed some plumbers or home owners use plumbers putty to seal the threads and in some cases tape.
Most of the time the putty or tape gets pushed through the system if too much was used.
Check by removing the shower head and testing the pressure and blowing anything else through, then checking the head itself for foreign objects.
Kohler has a cleaning and care page on thier web site if it needs cleaned.
