Toshiba 50A62 50" Rear Projection Television Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jun 22, 2011

Toshiba rear projection TV model 51vw9ua appears to have convergence problem. Both Convergence chips (STK392 110) have been replaced. However the picture is jaggered (horizontally). With the convergence test signal "cross" the horizontal line is is fine, however the vertical line is wavy. When the TV is turned ON the screen appears to have a horizontal alignment problem, after about 5 to 8 minutes the picture clears up but still appears horizontally misaligned. Any suggestion to resolve this issue? Is this a common problem?

Thank you for your advise. In terms of kits tvrepairworld.com was useful, it suggested replacing the convergence chips and 6 x 1.8 ohm metal film resistors (2 watts). I had already replaced the chips, replacing the 6 resistors hasn't improved my earlier problem.

Check the 1.8 ohm resistors, located in front of ICs. Try replacing all 3 of them.

  • Anonymous Jun 23, 2011

Thanks for the tip, replaced 6 x 1.8 ohm resistors ( I am guessing 3 for each convergence chip ). The local electronic shop didn't have any metal film resistors, so have used carbon resistors.

Use 1 watt resistors only and you need to know How To Enter Service Menu to realine Convergence.Service Menu is for Techicians Only Be very carefull when making adjustments
ortherwise settings will be wrong and convergences will not be correct.

Convergence and shut down

If the model listed is correct the only way to know if the stk-392-110 chips this set uses for convergence are causing shutdown is to unsolder all pins on both chips and see if set comes on.

I have a phillips 60 in rear projection tv model #60PP9401. and it is exhibiting the appearance of double vision, can this be fixed economically

Projection TV sets have two very common problems oulined below.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • No Audio/Video - TV Makes Chirping Sound

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

Toshiba Rear Projection TV picture color is now a greenish hue

Hi, I used to work in Best Buy and one of the key things about rear projection TVs and the reason they push those service plans on you is that the tubes/colors need to be calibrated each year. You can do this yourself by checking out the following website:

http://lgknowledgebase.com/kb/index.php?View=entry&EntryID=3229

If you are not able to adjust the convergence using the remote you will need to replace the convergence chips.

Typical Symptoms

1) Convergence menu does not work for one or more colors.
Such as: Red moves up,down, but left or right fails.

2) Screen is bowed looking.

If you have one or more of the problems above you need to replace the convergence chips. You can get a kit and instructions from www.TvRepairKits.com

Hope this helps :)

Convergence ic's

Here is a very cool site the the convergence chips shown:

http://www.casiasfamily.com/repairlog/tp50h15.html

Here is a power supply tech manual:
http://tacpservice.toshiba.com/tacp/training/Module2.pdf

There are several circuits in the tv that will cause this. the most common on your model is a bad convergence circuit. a repair cost will range around 400.00 or so. it is a good model and worth a repair.
