HP Laser Jet 4 Plus to iBook G4 serial to usb

I have an HP LaserJet 4 Plus printer. It has a serial and parallel port. I purchased a serial to usb cable in order to connect the printer to my iBook G4. I installed the software that came with the cable. I downloaded and installed a HP LaserJet 4 Plus driver for OSX for my computer. When I go through Printer Setup Utility and select USB to identify the printer, which is on and connected to the computer, the printer is not on the list.
Any suggestions?

Serial to usb is not plug and play so i don't believe this configuration will ever work.
parrallel to usb is plug and play 90% of the time.
purchasing and installing a port replicator is a 100% fix as long as the formatter on the printer is working properly. good luck!

HP LaserJet 1022 is a "host-based" printer so it must be connected to a PC. Load the driver on PC first and connect the USB cable when software tells you to do so.

Will not work on a Linksys print server.

LaserJet 1022N & LaserJet 1022NW have "special" HP print servers that can support HP host based printers.

I bought a new HP computer and it didnt have a serial port included in it. I purchased a secondary PCI Express card that gave me two serial ports. They are programmed in as com port 1 &2. They show...

Serial connection eh? Any reason you went with serial instead of parallel? The cards likely sell for about the same price or you could just buy a USB to parallel cable that would allow you to hook up a USB port of your computer to the parallel port on the printer.

The reason that it looks like the job disappears is likely due to the fact that the serial bus is not supporting bidirectional printing so the printer cannot acknowledge that it has received the job.

You have a parallel interface on the printer. It was commonly referred to as a Centronics 36 pin cable. Your computer probably doesn't have the interface to support it. The fix is to get a cable that will work from your computer to the printer. For this you will need a USB to Parallel (Centronics) cable.

It will be hard to go to a store and locate one but I know you can find them all day long on eBay for under $10.

Try searching for "USB to Parallel" cable and see what you come up with. If you're savvy on eBay, you might want to pick up some extra toner while your there as well. The part # for your printers toner is C3903A.

Nice black and white printer that should serve you well for quite a while. Not to great doing graphics but B&W it does rather well.

Good Luck

HP LaserJet II p Plus will not print. note spam website posted by john brown below

Hi,

I am assuming that you are using Vista. Based on your post/description:
1. the HP Compaq 6710b has no parallel port;
2. the HP LaserJet IIP Plus is only capable of either serial or parallel connection;
3. hence you're attempting a USB to Parallel interface;
4. the printer is installed in your notebook and is set to USB port;
5. from the printer a test print can be performed but not from the Printer Properties in your notebook;
6. all printing jobs initiated from the notebook results in an "Error".

With the above in mind, may I point/suggest that:
a. Windows Vista driver will only enable your HP LaserJet IIP Plus' basic functions to work. It is not 100% compatible;
b. alternately, you can try using the XP installation CD/drivers of the printer;
c. the compatibility issue may be compounded by the USB to parallel interface;
d. the USB to parallel interface may be hampered by a known Vista USB issue;
e. you can try patching/updating the Vista USB driver. Since this has been a recognized issue with Vista, Microsoft has posted a fix for this here or here.
f. verify that the printer does not display a 22 or 40 Error.

If the printing concern has not been rectified after completion of the above procedures, you may need to:
i. download and install HP Universal PostScript Print Driver; or
ii. consider using a wireless print server connected to the parallel port of the printer; or
iii.consider replacing your printer. Sorry.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

HP Laser Jet 1320n series

The HP LaserJet 1320 has a USB port and a Parallel port.

The HP LaserJet 1320n has a USB port and an Ethernet port.

USB-to-Parallel converter cables, like this one, are designed to attach a parallel device to a computer's USB port.

But you need to do the opposite (attach a USB device to a computer's parallel port). A USB-to-Parallel converter cable will not do this.
