I get an error when I try and enter certain freq. Any idea why?

I just purchased a Pro82 Scanner so I can listen to whats going on in my local area.
I am having trouble entering certain frequencies... for example in my area the local sheriff dispatch is 159.0900, yet when I try and input that frequency the scanner gives me an error code. Same thing for CHP dispatch and various other frequencies. Are these frequencies blocked because they are law enforcement or is there something I am not doing?
I'm a scanner newb... if it's not obvious.

How to listen to channels

Go here and you'll see a US map, (use link below)
  1. click on your state,
  2. then click on your county and it'll bring up a few links.
  3. One will be all emergency services,
  4. one will be schools in the area (or county) and might also be local business that are radio equipped.
  5. In addition you might get airport, and public utilities freq's. This link will take you to the largest site available for all things freq. related, amateur radio.
(I included a picture of the database site for any other people looking for freq's for their scanner. Straight up simple.)

Loaded freq per instructions scans and never stops to hear any chatter ie police and FD

The first thing I would try us to listen to the weather channels. You can get to them through the menu functions. If you can monitor a local weather channel, the scanner is working.
This is one of the first things I do. It's also a quick easy way to ensure you have a good antenna connection.
Once you verify it is working in the weather, recheck your frequencies. Start small outing a few certain agencies around you. Once they are working you can add more.

How do u unlock a pro82 scanner reciever? Is there an universal lock code?

The PRO-82, circa 1999, was designed and equipped with what might be called tamper-proof circuitry. Unlike many scanners from the 80's, there is no way to "unlock" this scanner or otherwise add frequency coverage that is not factory enabled. If you want wider coverage you'll need to purchase a different scanner.

Need the factory manual for the PRO-82? You can download and print it, at no cost, here:

Scanner not picking up local police-Fire freq

Do you still receive NOAA weather frequencies? Sounds like your local agencies have switched from simplex/standard frequency operation to trunking. I suggest you visit www.RadioReference.com to view the latest on active frequencies and systems in your area.

Have a Radio Shack pro82 and cannot pick up police freq.

You can get your local radio frequencies by doing a search (google.com) type in the city name, county name and state, then type in "radio frequencies". You should be able to find the list for your area..

I cant tune my Uniden BC60XLT-1 Handheld Scanner

you need to know the frequency you want to listen in on like local fire police and sheriff and ambulance channels you can go to bear-cat web site and they have a company there that will give you the scanner frequencies in your area code so you can store then to listen to them, you can also get the Freq. for the 1.2 million UN peace keepers in the U.S. as well. However you need to im put the frequencies manually and you need the manual so go to the web site for the uniden it's http://www.uniden.com and read how to store the freq. codes in the scanner. it will tell you how many you can store I think it's up to 10.
