On returning from a two week vacation, our pool guy informed us that our pump was smoking and sparking during his visit so he shut it down at the breaker box. Three weeks previously he informed us that the vaccumm line was blocked and that he would bring a suction machine to try to clear it on his next visit. I confirmed that the pump isn't working. When I turn it on it just pops the breaker each time. I removed a lot of debris from the bottom of the basket holder. Other than that it looks no different from when it worked. The pump is a Jacuzzi 15UMF-S, #94027115 built 13 Oct 2000. Part # 8-184949-2. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't even know where to start. Coincidentally, or not, the power in one of the bedrooms in my house lost power in all of the outlets on the same day that I flipped the breaker on and off on the pump.

SOURCE: motor hums then clicks off

Has the motor seemed a little slower in starting than usual? If so then you probably have a weak or defective motor capacitor. Try switching out with a new one. They are inexpensive.Try to turn the motor shaft at rear (under end cap) while it attempts to start. If the motor kicks on then replace capacitor.

SOURCE: Jacuzzi Magnum Force Pump not working

The number one problem is air leaks.......check all connections to see that they are tight, and rubber seals. The intake side would give you trouble with air leaks. If you dont find any leaks then I would pull the pump cover and check the impellor. Pool stores have parts and lots of knowledge.

SOURCE: pool pump is not working

The motor capacitor is bad. This usually means the motor is shot. It's hard to get capacitors for a quick fix

SOURCE: how to install motor housing bracket on a jacuzzi

The 'toothed' edge goes on top with the teeth facing towards the motor. You will also notice the small support arm in the plastic is narrower than in the other areas of the bracket. That lines up with the seal plates locating tabs so everything is then lined up correctly for the insertion into the housing.

Reddish smoke

Sounds like it possibly may have frozen internally. Ice blockage and water was not circulating thru it, yet the ignitors fired and fired until it overheated and shut down. Possible that the exchangers may have been fried, that is why the funny color of smoke. Once weather is warmer and not frozen, run the pump with heater off and check for leaks. If no leaks in the heater and you can confirm water is circulating thru your system (water returning into pool thru the return lines) turn or fire up the heater and inspect/monitor its operation.

A.O. Smith c48k2pa105c5 pool pump motor was running fine for 3 weeks. The other day it shut off cause of the thermal switch. Well now when I turn it on it works fien for a couple minutes then it shuts off...

If you mean that this motor is only 3 weeks old, and this is happening, return the motor.

If its an old motor and this is happening, purchase a new one. Even if you had a technician come out to look at the motor, chances are it would cost more than the motor itself.

Largest causes of thermal overload are.

-incorrect wiring
-wiring to wrong voltage
-incorrect wiring size
-bad motor windings
-bad rear end bearings.

I purchased and installed this model pump (FPOS1790PCA). The first couple of times there was water on the pool cover, the pump seemed to work fine. I have several inches of rain water on the cover...

You may want to check with Flotec first since many of the manufacturers handle warranty claims directly instead of the store being involved. If the unit falls within the stores return period then just take it back and excahange/return it...if not, Flotec is at: http://www.flotecpump.com/ResidentialContactUs_ContactUs.aspx

Select warranty from the drop down menu and go from there.

Why does the spa empty when the pump shuts off? just got a pool with an aqualink RS4 and no manual to look at. thanks

This problem can be caused by a couple things. the two most likely culprtits are either the absence of check valves and or incorrect actuator settings when the pump shuts down.

Your spa is most likely higher than the pool. You most likely have a spill over (waterfall) feature from the spa into the pool. This is so the spa water can be recirculated in pool mode. One of your actuator valves may be slightly off closed position in order to allow spill over in the spa, or you may have a dedicated overfill pipe in the circuit to feed water to spa in pool mode.

Whichever spill over piping you have set up, when the pump shuts down, water from the spa ( higher level than the pool) will backfeed through the overflow spa circuit, back through the pump and into the pool through either drain or return. Effectively rendering your spa level the same level as your pool.

To fix this problem, simply install check valves into the spa runs and as a secondary measure put one into the pool return run ( the run that feeds water to pool).

This will insure that when the pump shuts down, no matter which position the valve actuators may be set, water can not back feed through the pump circuit from spa to pool.
