Exterior finish on stainless steel model peeling

I have a Frigidaire FRS-26DR7DS4 stainless steel model with a smudge proof finish. It appears that the "smudge proof" protective coating is peeling off of the refrigerator doors underneath the handles, which are not coated, and under the ice/water dispenser. It looks terrible and I wasn't even aware that it had that coating on it until it started peeling off. I have only used the stainless steel cleaner that came with my refrigerator to clean it and I am not sure what to do about it at this point. I have only had it for about three years and it just looks awful. Help!

Just a thought. Our frigidaire stainless steel refrigerator came with a temorary protective film on the steel parts that we peeled off after it was installed. Is it possible you never removed your film when you got your refrigerator? That may be what is starting to peel off now. Again, just a thought, I could be wrong.

I have the same problem described above. In my case the protective film had been removed. The defect is in the Smudge-Proof coating that Frigidaire applies to it's Gallery line of appliances. The area around the door handle where my children leave fingerprints has begun to peel away from the door surface.

I also have the same problem. Happened after two weeks of having it. Customer service is awful and they make nothing to remedy the problem. Your better off with regular stainless steel without the coating because at least that they make repair kids for. Over 2k and I already need a new refrigerator. When I talked to customer service they were stumped. I said you made a product with no way to take care of the peeling and they were speechless. I will never purchase fridgedaire again.

My son is autistic and the preheat beep on our Frigidaire gallery oven scares him. It's a 2013 - not sure what model it is - it's a no-smudge stainless steel finish with black ceramic top.

Hello, Stephanie -

In order to find the correct information for you, the model number of your Frigidaire oven is necessary.

Watch this YouTube video to learn where to look for the model number for your oven:

Stainless steel oven finish peeling off

It is likely that the factory-installed clear plastic protective covering was not removed before the oven was placed into service.

Stainless Steel does not peel!

Ovens and other appliances with Stainless Steel finishes are made from solid sheets of the material. They are almost always sent from the factory with a protective plastic film on the finish.

Just find an edge of the appliance, and start peeling the protective film off. Pull it off slowly, as to not leave any possible residual glue or plastic on the appliance.

If the heat from the oven caused some of the plastic film to melt and it does not peel off, I would immediately call the store or dealer from which you purchased the oven and start hollering, as they did NOT properly prepare the item for sale (if it was delivered and installed).

If you purchased it in the crate/box, and installed it yourself, you must take responsibility for not having fully read the instructions before using the oven.

In that case, I would peel as much of the plastic off as is possible, and then use some LOW ODOR CLEANING SOLVENT ( or PAINT THINNER) to remove the rest, using ONLY a soft cotton towel to soak it and rub it with. Do NOT use anything abrasive or scratchy, or you will totally ruin the finish! Do NOT use the scrubber side of a sponge, or a Brillo pad, or Choreboy-type pad!

*** CAUTION!!! *** DANGER! *** The fumes and vapors from the solvent ARE EXPLOSIVE AND FLAMMABLE! DO NOT USE THE STOVE UNTIL THE VAPORS AND FUMES HAVE TOTALLY DISSIPATED!!! Open the doors or windows to the room for fresh air when you are using the solvent, and READ THE INSTRUCTIONS thoroughly!

All is not lost yet, but getting melted plastic off the stove will take some time and a very gentle touch. Be patient, and good luck.

Frigidaire Gallery Stainless Steel Appliance finish defect. The Smudge-Proof finish on my Frigidaire refrigerator began peeling off after I owned the product for 14 months. It appears to be a clearcoat...

Frigidaire Gallery & Professional appliances put a micro-coating over their brushed stainless to help prevent smudges and fingerprinting. However, if this coating has begun to peel off there isn't much you can do about it. You can order a new door for it for around $250-$400 depending on the door. Very rare for this to happen. If was a common problem, they wouldn't make it like this.

If my Kitchen Aid KSF26C6XYY00 door is in fact made of stainless steel, why do fridge magnets stick to it? Ohter people I know that have stainless steel fridges say that the magnets do not stick to t

Stainless steel is a term for a family of high chromium steels, some of which do in fact stain, although they do not rust as ordinary steel does.

The more expensive 'austenitic' stainless is non-magnetic, but harder to work into product shapes. 'Martensitic' stainless is a little more prone to staining and corrosion, but easier to work with, and is magnetic. Then 'ferritic' stainless is even cheaper, but less corrosion proof, and is also magnetic.

So yes, many stainless steels are magnetic, and if the manufacturer has not used the very most corrosion proof but expensive grade, then you will see it in that way. I would not see much reason for a fridge door to be made from austenitic stainless.

Finish on "stainless steel" door is deteriorating

Refrigerator was sold as 'stainless steel', but is not, a magnet won't stick to it.
There are many different alloys that are called 'stainless' steel but all of them have some chrome, some nickel and some steel. Depending on the strength of the magnet and the specific alloy, it may or may not adhere. Generally, the higher chrome and nickel content, the less magnetic it will be.
I think that the brushed surface of your fridge was coated with a kind of clear-coat to prevent fingerprints from adhereing to the brushed surface and that clear-coat is now missing in the areas of concern.
The only cure for tha would be the wholesale removal of the doors and the remaining clear finish and then respraying it with a quality clear finsh.
Ain't progress grand?
We considered all stainless stuff for our new home a couple of years ago, decided we liked black better and now hate that too.
