I bought a cordless uniden phone DCX 640 on craigslist. it came with an extra handset. My problem is that there is no owner's manual so I don't know how to use the many buttons on the phone base. Also, the original handset doesn't seem to work-- it keeps showing the message Welcome! Please Wait... Help! Thanks

Since you didn't specify the model of your Uniden DECT 6.0 system I can only suggest you select it from the list beginning here to download a copy of the manual.
Here's the link to the 1580-2 manual at Uniden. It's the same system, except the -3 version has 3 handsets and the -2 only has 2. The base unit and extra handsets are the same.
Since you didn't specify the model of your phone I can't give you a definite answer, but on most Uniden DECT 6.0 phones you press and hold the # button until it prompts you for the silent setting.
If you need a manual you can select the model of your phone from the list beginning at http://www.uniden.com/owners-manuals/dect-phones/scat/dectphones_mnl/
Since you didn't specify the model I can't give you a definite answer, but on many Uniden DECT 6.0 phones you press a VOL-up or VOL-down button on the handset during a call to adjust the volume.
