I have windows os and there is a autorun.inf something hidden file in my all drives.my avira antivirus has blocked that file.and i want to know that is the file safe or it is going to harm my pc.what...

Autorun.inf is the primary instruction file associated with the Autorun function. Autorun.inf itself is a simple text-based configuration file that tells the operating system which executable to start, which icon to use, and which additional menu commands to make available. In other words, autorun.inf tells Windows how to deal open the presentation and treat the contents of the CD.

That being said, it would depend on what it is trying to run automatically. If it is trying to run iTunes automatically that is one thing, but if it is running a virus automatically it would not be safe.

You can right click on the file, and edit it with notepad/wordpad to find out what program it is trying to run.
tip

How to remove Autorun.inf Virus ?

Manual way:
1.) Open Notepad and do not write anything in it. Go to File > Save as autorun.inf
2.) Copy the blank autorun.inf file that you have created in the above step and paste it in your "Pen Drives"
3.) Remove your pendrive.
4.) Re-insert your PC. Now your pendrive is safe to use.
Automatic way:
1.) Download Panda USB Vaccine which allows users to vaccinate their PCs in order to disable autorun completely so that no program from any USB/CD/DVD drive can auto-execute.
2.) Download Flash_Disinfector.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone.
  • Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Flash Disinfector will remove any autorun.inf files; create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection

D drive not open.

If it happens to you that you are not able to open the drives by double click, then your system may be infected with virus. When this virus infects your windows, it automatically creates a autorun.inf in the root directory of each drive. This autorun.inf file is usually hidden, read only and is a system file. This virus also disables folder option. This is not a major problem and can be fixed by deleting autorun.inf file.

  1. Open Start > Run. Now type cmd and press enter. Command prompt window will open.
  2. Type cd/
  3. Type attrib -r -h -s autorun.inf
  4. Now type del autorun.inf
  5. Now type d: and press enter for d: drive partition and repeat steps 3 and 4.
  6. Repeat step 5 for all your hard disk drives.
  7. Restart your computer.

How to remove write protect on my usb flash drive

Maybe you are infected with a virus. Run CMD on rrun command or get to run the Windows Dos Prompt. Goto flash drive drive letter. Then type DIR/AH, this will show you list of hidden files in your flash drive usually if you get an autorun.inf you are infected with a virus. Type TYPE AUTORUN.INF with the space in between. This will show you the script if it will run an exe command usually untrusted one. Usually the autorun.inf and the linked exe is attributed to be hidden, system, and read only.

If the files in your flash drive is not so important you can try to delete the autorun.inf only. But you will gonna do this first. In its drive letter type ATTRIB -H -R -S AUTORUN.INF hit enter. Then type DEL AUTORUN.INF. trying to access the flash drive in windows screen you can get that something is cannot be found. But you could actually delete and load files into it. Or try to access the drive rightclicking it then select EXPLORE.

Hope this help. Post comments if this does not help.

Problem with windows xp

Sometimes it happens in windows XP that you are not able to open drives on your hard disk. When you double click on the drives icons or right click on the drive>>explore in My computer ,the drive does not open.

This problem is generally caused by most of the viruses which infect windows XP system. They block or restrict your access to any of the drives.

But don’t worry this is not a big trouble it can be fixed easily.

Fix:

Normally when a virus infects a windows system which causes a drive opening problem, it automatically creates a file named autorun.inf in the root directory of each drive.

This autorun.inf file is a read only ,hidden and a system file and the folder option is also disabled by the virus. This is deliberately done by the virus in order to protect itself. autorun.inf initiates all the activities that the virus performs when you try to open any drive.

Very simple . virus create some bad registry if you want to solve this problem then delet this registry

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2

delete all drive from here

Usb flash drive icon changes into folder icon

This issue may have resulted from a virus infection on the machine the drive was plugged into.

You’ll need to delete the file autoruns.inf located on your flash drive.

By default, Windows hides this file, so before you can delete it you must make a couple of changes (you may reverse these after you’ve finished):

Open My Computer
Tools
Folder Options…
Click on the View tab
Under “Hidden files and folder” choose “Show hidden files and folders”
Remove the tick from “Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
OK

Go back to My Computer and click on your flash drive. If you can’t open it that way, try right clicking on it and choose “Explore.”

Find the autoruns.inf file, right click on it and choose “Delete.” Confirm “Yes.”

Unplug and re-plug the drive in. You should be back to normal.

Hope that helps.

Couldn't open the hard Drive folders....

hi sir,

i think you have an autorun.inf file residing at your local drives. this probably infected by a virus.

go to control panel >folder option> click View> choose "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and uncheck Hide Protected Operating System Files, this will show hidden autorun.inf file. In your explorer, right click your local disk and click explore, this will show all your files and folders of your drive, navigate autorun.inf file, if found delete it.
note: it has an associated file called vbsscript file...if found also delete it..do the same with the other drives. empty recycle bin and restart.
