Jul 14, 2017 - I have the same issue. Almost new machine. Screen says "clear carriage jam", but there's no paper jammed in there. Can't do anything with the printer, since ...
Unfortunately no....the HP Photosmart C4385 printer uses HP 74/75 (or 74XL/75XL) ink cartridges. However, you can get your cartridges refilled at most Costco stores or any Fry's Electronics store at a fraction of the cost of a new ink cartridge.

Often a carriage jam is caused by a paper jam. If you're getting a carriage jam message and a paper jam message, this video should help. You-Tube video "wPjahOY5CDo" placeholder
yes, that is a carriage jam and not paper, the grinding is from the clean station that gets blocked with dried ink and cant move. you need to open the printer and clean the ink off of the clean station so it can clean properly and not cause a carriage jam.
Regarding the issue related to the carriage being stuck, we replaced one of the printer cartridges and ran the scanner and rebooted our computer, then our printer resumed its proper functioning.

So sorry to hear that you are having issues with your C4385 printer. HP's
All-In-One printers seem to be very touchy when it comes to carriage
jams, and mine is no exception. They are usually caused by little bits
of paper left over from a previous jam, so you just have to work out
where to find them. HP produced a page with diagrams to help people
find them. Please click here to access their solution page.
