Bios update mc7801u...from 9911 to 9930 wont update using phlash tells me error 144...do just says cannot update the bios

That is impossible to give that kind of information, you should have a tag number underneath the laptop that is used when computers are serviced.

According to my troubleshooting manual of Acer Aspire 4520-Z3 about

BIOS Flash Utility:

The BIOS flash memory update is required for the following conditions:
New versions of system programs
New features or options
Restore a BIOS when it becomes corrupted.

Use the Phlash utility to update the system BIOS flash ROM.
NOTE:
If you do not have a crisis recovery diskette at hand, then you should
create a Crisis Recovery Diskette before you use the Phlash utility.
Do not install memory-related drivers (XMS, EMS, DPMI) when you use the Phlash.
Please use the AC adaptor power supply when you run the Phlash utility.
If the battery pack does not contain enough power to finish BIOS flash,
you may not boot the system because the BIOS is not completely loaded.

Follow the steps below to run the Phlash.
1. Prepare a bootable diskette.
2. Copy the flash utilities to the bootable diskette.
3. Then boot the system from the bootable diskette.

The flash utility has auto-execution function.

You need to prepare a bootable Flashdisk into dos mode
then you should search for the above mentioned crisis recovery
diskett and transfer its content to the flashdisk.

I read from another forum that for recovery of Aspire 4520 problem
can be done through pressing of the keys combination as follows:
press FN + ESC and hold them, then just hit the power on button
and release it, after awhile "the power button" should blink red,
release the keys FN+ESC and don't touch anything.

After successful of recover the bios it should restart normally.
That happen after 20-30 minutes. If it doesn't restart just repeat the
process.

Instructions on Upgrading the BIOS.
Step 1: Create a bootable BIOS upgrade disk
This step can be performed on any system (desktop/notebook computer) running a Microsoft Operating system.

1. Place the BIOS upgrade disk in the floppy drive of your pc/notebook.
2. Copy the system files onto the BIOS upgrade disk to make it bootable.
3. For example:
   MS DOS prompt: type 'sys A:'
   MS Windows:
4. Double click "My computer" on the desktop.
5. Right click the floppy drive icon.
6. Select "Format?"
7. Select the "copy system files only" option

Step 2: Upgrading the BIOS

1. Attach a floppy disk drive to the LifeBook to be upgraded.

3. Reboot the system. Boot from the floppy.
4. At the command prompt, type:
   phlash /mode=3 filename.rom (put a space after "phlash" and after "3". Filename is the name of the BIOS.)

Step 3: Change BIOS settings (For users upgrading from Windows 9x to Windows 2000).
To allow Windows 2000 to better manage your system, change the following settings in your BIOS:
a) Boot the notebook and press F2 to enter BIOS setup.
b) Set Power Management to Disabled

You can power drain the pc if the bios won't update.. Turn off the pc
then unplug cables from the desktop or laptop then remove the battery (only on laptop) , then press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.

Then replug all cables and batteries. Then turn on the pc and check the Bios if it updates.

your battery has just gone to junk, you will just have to use your power cable, until you are able to buy a new battery. Your lucky though my battery kept crashing my laptop. I just had to remove the battery completely and keep use the power cable to get it to work.

it is not flashable then you dont ever update your bios unless it has a problem.

Can you tell me how you have the 144 connected to your speakers, and your computer? Besides that, one quick fix might be to turn the MON MIX in the upper left corner, all the way to the right.

If that doesn't help, please post your ins and outs.

pls run an earlier version of windows xp i.e. sp1 as earlier processor and motherboard may run xp sp 3 but it will not provide 100% compatibility

First try turning off the onboard audio device using the BIOS interface. Try pressing f4, f2 or delete key rapidly at the flash screen beginning when you first turn on the computer. Look around in the bios (usually in "integrated periperals" area) and disable any onboard audio options that you see.
-In windows XP you can go to Control panel - Sound Devices and change the "map through" feature, select your default device, and run a hardware test simulation with a microphone for each device. Nice setup btw.
