I have found that every so often, especially while stepping on the board, the Wii Fit would get disconnected. I did a little research and found some interesting clues to why it might be happening. I had a theory. Since the batteries are at the bottom of the board I thought the vibration of stepping plus the pull of gravity might be loosening the battery connections enough for the board to lose power temporarily. To test my theory I made a shim out of cardboard from a cereal box to hold the batteries firmly in place. This seemed to have done the trick since I have not had the problem since. I created a template you can get from my site http://www.everythingtech.net/2009/03/wii-fit-board-connectivity-fix/
I've had my WiiFit for about 4 months or more, and now for the past several weeks my girlfriend while using it it stops, screen goes black and says "Communication has been lost, hit "A" and power button on the board". Anyone know why this is?
I'm on my second balance board - the first one was replaced because of these problems. It seems to work for about 6 weeks, and then problems arise. I've been having problems for about 2 weeks now, but had been plugging the rechargeable batteries into the USB connector, which seemed to help when using the board.
It took them a week to replace the last board. I'm thinking of buying a second just so I can swap them out every time one of them goes bad. But this sounds like a design flaw, since so many people are running into it.
Very discouraging... ;(
Try to change out the batteries with something like Energizer Lithium Ion batteries (high quality) the batteries that came with the game may have been defective.
have you tried adding the risers, it may just not be registering you getting on depending on what kind of surface you are on
sorry I couldn't help. sounds like a defective unit. hopefully you can exchange it or something a lot of places that sell are very strict on the return policy of video games on top of that no many of them even have any in stock. I wish you luck.

I had the same problem. I called Nintendo support and they are going to either fix it or send a replacement. The tech said sometimes the sensors get stuck.

Have the same problem. Have tried the sync solution and it does not work have replaced the batteries and it is a no go...guess I have to break downa nd call tech support.
Please step off the board and press A - then phone support and expect to have to send your board back if you have checked the sync etc and cannot clear the message.
The Wii Fit board is telling me to step off the board and press A, I never was standing on the board, I press A and get the same message. Very frustrating. Have tried to Sync it again, changed batteries. Nothing has helped, board is only 12 days old.
Tried changing batteries and re-syncing the balance board but still asks me to step off nad press A, is now getting very annoying

Same problem - works with Drums on Wii Music -but Wii Fit - keeps telling me to get off and press A and I'm not even on it. Really annoying!! Phoned up and was told to take batteries out, turn upside down like a beetle! and leave for 24hrs - did this as last resort and still NOTHING!! Had it less than a week and now it's going to be looked at - not good enough as my children are really disappointed!!
same problem after 7 weeks. Could be related to battery charger use?
I LOVE my Wii fit and have used it faithfully for 58 days. Suddenly yesterday, halfway through a workout, it said, "Please step off the balance board and press A." I charged the rechargeable battery pack made for the system for 24 hours, and today the problem remains.
It tells me to step off and Press A. But when I do, it just repeats the same message. However, if I pick up the balance board and press A, it works.
Got the same problem - board is only 12 days old and has suddenly started saying please step off board and press A. Not even stood on the board when this message appears! Using a rechargable battery pack on a wooden floor. Any help on this please?
