Question about LeapFrog Leapster Explorer Learning Game System (green)

My son's Leapster Explorer suddenly has no sound. If you hit the increase sound button, nothing happens. If you hit the decrease button you see the volume bar on the bottom of the page. Do you know how to fix this?

I had same problem, just fixed it by a little hack. The volume up switch is broken.
1. Remove accessory door on bottom. 2. Remove all screws on back. 3. Open back cover.
Looking at the exposed board, there are 2 volume switches (back to back). Directly next the switches are four contacts: the upper 2 are for volume down, the lower 2 are for volume up.
4. Place the battery pack on the board and hold it down. 5. Press the power button to turn on the unit. 6. Use a small wire to jump the volume up contacts multiple times to change the volume to maximum (or desired level). 7. (Optional) Remove the volume buttons and throw away the rubber cushions to prevent the volume from changing. 8. Replace everything back in place.

    hi Joe,
I'm not sure where the 'volume contacts' would be located. how can i identify what these are/look like? please help. thanks.

    hi Joe,
i'm not sure how to identify what the 'four contacts' are. can you explain what they look like please? and if they are on the front or the back of the motherboard. thanks!

  • Joe Maestro Sep 01, 2011

They look like shiny metallic dots directly next to the volume buttons on the back of the board. You should see them after you remove the back cover.

  • sophire1 Sep 02, 2011

hi Joe, thanks so much for your response. one more question, I don't have a wire so I've used a safety pin to touch the contacts but nothing happens. is there a specific motion required to get the volume to change?

  • anger183 Sep 11, 2011

Works like a charm!! My 5 yr old daughter is once again happy that she can play her Explorer. THank you so much!!!!

  • Joe Maestro Sep 12, 2011

Nope, there are no special motions. Unlike many sports, the key is not in the wrist; it's just a matter of closing the circuit.

I followed the instructions to above to open the back (bottom screws/plate, battery pack/rechargeable battery pack, remove screws from back) I then noticed that the small connecting metal directly behind the up volume button had broken where it was soldered. I then took a nail file and pressed the metal extension to the grid (small silver bubble underneath it). I replaced the back (be careful of the spring on the large green top button/there is a sliding bar that popped out on me) and the volume works correctly now. Hope this helps!

My Leapster 2 had the same problem. I used your steps to fix it. The difference was the connection point was around on the front. So I wiggled a flat head screwdriver into the front where the up button is. Worked great.

I had the same issue, but I fixed it by Repairing through LeapsterConnect. Just connect your Leapster and when it is ready hit the Settings on the right up corner. Then choose Repair button; you also can hit Reset, but it will erase everything from your Leapster. For me it worked.

I can't find the "repair" button under the settings menu. Could it be someplace else?

Hiya, your child probably spilled something on his leapster, honestly there is no way to fix this but if you would like to try putting it in a tub or rice, if it has any liquid in it that should take it out.
Good Luck I hope this helps :D

Fn button for volume in Lenovo g560 don't appear mark of increase or decrease ,, as i install new version of win 7 ,, and same case in brightness

Make sure you Press and Hold the FN key then hit the key that increases or decreases the volume. If the FN key is not held down while you press the volume keys, they will do nothing. The brightness works the same way, you must Press and Hold the FN key then hit the key that controls the brightness.

I gave my son a leapster explorer about a month now and it's volume just stopped working and it wont hear anything.

Hello,
there are three basic reasons why the leapster explorer won't bring out sound.
1. Defective speaker
The speaker of your leapster explorer maybe defective, this can make it not bring out any sound. Disassemble the leapster explorer, check the speaker part, test the speaker with a AA battery. If you hear any sound using the battery, then it means there is nothing wrong with the speaker.
2. Loose wire connection
Disassemble the leapster explorer, check the wires connecting the speaker to the board. Check for any wire cut, or loose connection which can cause the speaker not to bring out sound. . 3. Sound IC/Card/Board
If non of the above is the cause of the problem, then it means the leapster explorer is having a defective sound ic/board/card. There is an IC on the board of the leapster explorer which is responsible for sound. If this ic has a shot, there won't be any sound. If this be the cause, I think it's high time to took the leapster explorer to a repairman because this requires skill.
I hope the above is clear. If not, please let me know for further assistance.
Regards.

How "often" does it click?
Internet Explorer does a "click" everytime you access a new web-page -- turn your speakers up/down to increase/decrease the sound.
