It simply freezes up nearly every time I play a dvd!!! The picture freezes, the numbers stop, the machine is still on but everything is froze. I either have to shut it down via the remote and start it up again immediately to get back to the spot of the video that it stopped, or, when that does not work, I have to unplug the machine altogether. Doing that makes me have to start the video all over again. It also freezes up when it is recording.
The customer service folks suggested a factory reset.

The problem is in the laser pickup assembly, the stepper motor that moves the laser is sticking on the worm gear or excessive ware on the gear linkage is preventing it from moving.
Sound like it either has one or two problems, the door is stuck and or the door eject motor has failed. Look in the front to the player for a small paperclip like hole, and use a paper clip to manual eject the and engage the loading mechanism usually located under the door for most cases. Check you manuals troubleshooting section for manually ejecting a CD..
As mentioned on the Jan12 e-mailed Panasonic - surprise, no response! However on Panasonic's web site drill down to firmware upgrades for DVD machines. There is an upgrade available for the E50P. Straight forward fix, download to computer, expand it and copy to a CD-R. Put CD-R into E50 and recorder will check and update firmware. I did this on the 13th and have recorded two commercial free movies and both have played back perfectly after finalization. Time will tell. Hope this helps. Golferdon
Sometimes this unit gets "confused" - not sure why -- but try first using a CD cleaning disk and let it start and stop a couple times (sometimes lens gets dirty and does this) - if that doesn't help then try unplugging unit and leave unplugged (from wall socket) for about 30min then plug in, set local time and then see if the disks play okay - sometimes this "resets system"
Be sure there is plenty of space around the DVD player. I place mine on top of the cabinet without anything on top if it. Being enclosed seem to affect some DVD players. Also, dust frequently...
If it's a very cheap unit, it's possibly because the machine can't process the information quickly or efficiently enough, thusly causing the picture to freeze up while the processing catches up with it. Friend has a $30 unit, which happens to constantly.
