If you have Windows 7 you can check this by clicking on the "Start" button at the bottom of the screen, click on the "HP" folder and click on "HP Solutions Center". A graft will come up showing you the printer cartridges levels. Click on the small graft chart at the top right of the screen and the graft will enlage and show you exactly the staus of the ink levels. Click "Print" at the bottom of the screen and it'll run a print test. All 4 cartridges need to be above the "Low" level. It only takes one of them to mess up the print.

I have a photosmart C4700 and it won't print in black How can I tell if it's out of ink?

Follow these steps to check the ink levels: >Click Start . >Click Printers and Faxes . >Right-click the icon for your printer , and then click Printing Preferences . >Click the Features tab. >Click the Printer Services button. The Toolbox window opens. >Click the Estimated Ink Levels tab. A window opens that indicates the estimated ink level of each cartridge.
NOTE:Depending on the printer, the estimated ink level indicators can vary in appearance.
>If the ink level indicators show that a cartridge is low or empty, replace the cartridge.

Ink cartridge levels

If you refill your own ink cartridges the instructions tell you to ignore the low ink messages, so that should not prevent it from printing.

Ink level problem

are you refilling your cartridges? if so, there are two contacts on the print head that connect to the printer program that estimate ink usage and what's left. go to a site that deals with hp printers and they'll explain to you on how to reset your software for ink usage.
