Bumil safe

Hope my experience helps someone: followed instructions above, removed batteries, unscrewed 2 Phillip screws. This allowed the electrical assembly to be lifted off the door. No override key hole or anything. What I did notice though was that the negative (black) soldering connection point was completely corroded. Greenish white stuff. The red positive side was fine. Used a flat head screwdriver to scrape gunk off to expose the metal contact. Then also exposed some of the black wire (shiny metal). Placed fresh batteries back in, and pressed the freshly exposed contact and wire together. Voila, the unit beeped and came nack to life. Entered combination, managed to unlock and open the safe. Re-soldered the contact and wire together. Fixed. Just simple corrosion resulting in loss of electrical conductivity. Crude electrical system, easy fix.

X type with flat battery

Get into the engine bay first and recharge, or fit a new battery. You could put a set of jump leads on as a temp measure to open the boot latch.
See http://www.bluejag.co.uk re battery replacement. An I have written up a tip sheet on here re Jump starting. Hope this helps.
