I just bought this solution to save me having to open my external cases and uninstalling then reinstalling drives all the time. I needed SATA & PATA support so I thought this was the right item for me. I installed a SATA drive out of the box using this adapter, no problem. Today i am trying to access a Win98SE FAT32 13GB drive to remove the files so I can reuse the drive elswhere. I'm trying to access it on my WinXP Pro Dell XPS w/3gb RAM. The drive is listed in the Device Manager but it does not show up in Windows Explorer. I know USB Thumb drives using FAT32 have shown up without problem on this system, am I doing something wrong? I hooked up drive to adapter, adapter to PC, started PC. HDD jumper is set to Master, connectors are attached correctly. What could be going on?
There shouldn't be any problem accessing FAT32 drives of that size.
Check your disk management (right-click "my computer", hit "manage" and then click on the "disk management")
It should tell you what kind of formatting the disk is, and what the drive-letter is.
If it shows as being FAT32, then you're fine. If it doesn't, the FAT has been corrupted and may require a disk rescue or some kind of disk fixing utility.
Assuming it shows the partition as healthy and FAT32, but it doesn't have a drive-letter, right-click on it and "change driveletter". Pick a letter and hit OK. It should now show up!

my external device via usb its not recognised by the system currently am using win XP SP2
I have the same problem both on XP and Vista.
But... my disk isn't showing up under manage / disk management. It is showing up under disks in device manager... as a usb disk. I'd love to give it a number but its now showing up there.
the details are not within disk management at all.... its as though its not there.... just device manager.
if you look at the device policy its unchangeable as 'optimized for performance', 'enable write cacheing'. -- i was thinking it should be 'optimized for quick removal' like other usb drives. if you try to populate the information under volumes -- you get back that device is unreadable... but i am certain it is a good drive.
