I had this same problem and discussed it with DeLonghi customer service. My machine was grinding 20 seconds for a double shot and ground coffee was coming out of the top and spilling over inside what a mess! DeLonghi thought it was potentially a problem with the control board - grinding time too long - which is an expensive repair. I also called the local factory-authorized service and described the same problem. They asked what kind of beans I was using and I answered Starbucks espresso. They said that Starbucks is too oily, clogs the machine, and that I should try beans that are lighter. I also checked with an engineer who used to work at Starbucks and he made the same guess. I tried an Italian roast espresso from a local market and it worked! I've had no problems since. The new beans cleaned out the oils and I'm getting great shots. This is a good machine, but is best making single shots.
Thank you so much for everyone's posts. We have two Delonghi Magnifica's and the newest one was not acting like Maggie#1 at our 2nd home. CostCo is always switching their products, so when they discontinued the Sumatra we were buying, we switched to the San Francisco Dark Roast. Maggie #2 was grinding forever, and lots of grounds kept winding up in the tray. SOS (stuck on stoopid--Fixya won't let me spell it correctly), I thought the oily beans were "quality" until I started doing some much needed research as a result of reading these posts. I immediately took the "oily" San Francisco beans out of Maggie#2 and went to the store a purchased some medium roast beans. After two days, the overflow stopped and she is grinding properly. Also, the strangest thing is that I was drinking several cups of coffee every day and nothing was affecting me. I've been drinking coffee for years like that and I didn't think anything of it. The past two days, I have been wired after just two cups (I use mugs, of course). I simply didn't realize that oily coffee was not the best (SOS again!). So thanks again! It really helped a lot!
SOURCE: the Saeco Incanto machine grinds away but no water or coffee
Are there any grounds in discharge tray and if yes are they wet or dry?
If they are dry then the machine has a water circuit problem. If they are wet then the brew unit is blocked or the grind settings need to be adjusted coarser.

Hi Alan,
This posting is back on the unsolved boards again. I cannot see what anyone else has told you and I don't know what you have tried. So, I'm starting fresh....
If your control panel is not reading that you have inserted the container, then one of several things could be wrong.
I imagine you have already checked and cleaned all the parts involved and made sure that the lids are sealing and the container is seated properly. Clean around the door to be sure it closes securely.
If all of these things are in proper order, then it could be that the control panel has gone bad. Is there a reset button somewhere on your machine? Have you tried to go through the descaling/cleaning procedure and restart the machine?
If none of this works, I would suggest contacting DeLonghi to talk to a technician. Here is a contact page I got from the internet: http://www.delonghiusa.com/index.php?texts&pid=3
You may have already found the contact site, but if all else has been checked and found to be ok, I think that is your only recourse now.
Hope this helps. If it does, I'd appreciate a 4 thumbs up. Thanks,
Handie Andie

There are two reasons for this usually. Either the grinder is jammed or the grinding wheel or wheels have broken. Your machine needs to go to a repair shop to be looked at.

I had the same problem. With my machine a little O ring came off the main unit. It was on the little pipe above the big pipe where you would slide your jug in to. I bought a spare o ring from the hardware store and all is good now.
