I've a movie in Avi format when i open it plays just for 16 seconds with "codec error: use windows media player Aborting video redirecting to microsoft codec download page" on the screen. That redirects me to this webpage http://freaktorrents.info/play/?embedded=false. This site asks to download a player but when i click on it the page won't open

This is clearly due to the codec issue for Windows Media Player not playing AVI files. Windows Media Player is available to support all the codecs contained in AVI files, but some new codecs in AVI invented in later years, such as Xvid, DivX, DX50, MP4V, and MPEG-4 cannot be supported by Windows Media Player since it has not been updated.

Solution: Install the missing codecs. In such a case, what you need to do is to download the required codecs, such as Xvid. After downloading, you can just restart your computer and Windows Media Player, then WMP can play AVI smoothly. Learn more about how to update Windows Midea Player Codecs. Or you can try some other players that can open AVI files such as Leawo Blu-ray Player and 5K player.

RE: GPX Touchscreen Media Player MT851B My .avi movie files are showing "file format error " before convertion. After i convert the .avi movie files, only the first 15-20 minutes of the movie...

you will need an advanced movie editor or converter that can convert the video from the supported types(even if it is already an .avi file) to: 320x240 resolution, using the xvid mpeg4 codec for video and mpeg layer3 mp3 audio codec. the quality can only be as high as 64 kbps i believe.
the player itself comes with a converter either built-in or on a cd. this converter sucks though and wont sync up the audio to the video very well at all. so i suggest you use a high quality converter so the videos will be watchable.

I assume you are using the Windows Media Player to play the .avi formats on your OS Windows PC?

If this is the case, you do not have the necessary "codecs" to play the .avi files. Download & install the latest codec package ie K-Lite Mega Codec Pack or K-Lite Codec Pack @ http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack.htm

Hope it helps.

Every time i open the GOM player it would ask for "FIND codec"

GOM Player includes many codecs (XviD, DivX, FLV1, AC3, OGG, MP4, H263) Along with different media format such as AVI, MPG, MPEG and DAT, GOM Player also supports streaming Windows media format (WMV, ASF, ASX).

Possible Reason:

* Ensure that you have downloaded a genuine version and not a broken file, which is likely to miss some codecs, GOM is a FREE media player with popular audio & video codecs built-in. So you won't need to install separate codecs for most videos. For those videos that require a separate codec, GOM Player will find one.

* Without the appropriate codec, you'll be prohibited from playing AV files/the codec for which the file you are playing is missing (playback error), which prompts you to "Find Codec" screen. In the case you need other codecs, the 'Find Codec' popup will assist you in searching for the correct codec to play your file. If you didn't find any: first reason is likely to be the issue.

Fixes:

*Search Result will be shown on a new internet page. Once youve found it, simply download and install to watch the AV files.

AVI formatted files behave as audio only

It is likely that the files are encoded with DIVX, you can download the Divx plugin for windows Media playere here.
http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/

watch your options on the install to avoid those pesky toolbars
