My suggestion is to set the 'Start Menu' and 'Notification area' to default settings.

1) Right-click the Start icon and select Properties.
Click Taskbar tab > click 'Customize...' in Motification area' section.
Uncheck 'Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar' (it looks like you have this on)
Click 'Restore default icon behaviors'
test to see if taht fixes the issue.

If all is OK, Re-check the 'Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar' if you like and test again.

I hope this helps.

I have an HP Pavilion dv 7 notebook pc. not sure why... in the middle of my screen a bar shows up with the word "volume" and a sound bar indicating that volume is twitching between 35% and 50%...

The volume slider on your laptop is failing or having problems, I have had this issue my self it is usually caused by dirt and grime, so you may want to give it a good cleaning or residual heat from the processor. I'm posting the link to an hp support thread below, with several other fixes not mentioned here. I hope I could Help.

How do you turn on the volume? Thank You.

1. Press the Fn key and while holding it down, press the F8 key momentarily to toggle muting of the speaker. An icon of the speaker appears at the bottom middle of the screen showing muting on or off.
2. After making sure the muting is off (no slash symbol on the speaker icon), press and hold Fn again.
3. With Fn pressed, press the key with the upward triangle and speaker symbol to increase volume which is shown at the bottom middle of the screen by the green lettering & vertical bars Volume ''''''''''''
4. With Fn pressed, press the key with the downward triangle and speaker symbol to decrease volume which is shown at the bottom middle of the screen by the green lettering & vertical bars Volume '''

Volume on my hp dv7-2043ci is not working. volume

check whether the drivers are installed properly and try by re installing the driver after removing the existing sound rivers
This can be done by using the device manager
In the device manager you can find whether driver is installed if it is installed and not working means right click it and give uninstall ,automatically it will search for drivers and ask the required driver or it install if backup is present already

Light-up volume bars on the hp pc notebook dv7 1132nr

Hi Folks....
If you are talking about the Quick Launch buttons of the Notebooks from where we usually increase, decrease or mute the Volume, the lights will be still and will not increase or decrease with the increase or decrease in Volume.
However, you do have a utility which should be preinstalled in Notebooks called HP Quick Touch which shows the bars on the Display when the volume is Increased or Decreased  using the Quick Launch buttons. This application is not compatible with Windows Vista 64 bit edition.
The HP Quick Touch application is available for download from the link below :
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38001-38500/sp38358.exe

Save the file in the Notebook and double click it once the download is completed to install the application.
Hope this helps....
