We have the cr704. the volume/power switch got a little smashed in a move. it would crackle real bad and had a hard time keeping the volume through both speakers. not a novice with electronics , figured possibly a loose solder or bad wire. not so , something within the switch itself had worked loose. i have the enitre switch laid out before me and need to know an assembly order, or schematic/ diagram of somesort so i can get this back together and playing. if you would please sir.

could be a small bit of dirt on the inside of the volume switch,
try spraying w.d40. then just keeping turning it up and down to see if it clears it.if it crackles as you turn it up or down then its just a bit of dust on the switch.
can mean several things. The crackle is subjective and can mean distortion. Distortion most of the time comes out of the amplifier. Could be you have blown a capacitor in the power supply of the amplifier, making it work with quasi half the voltage. There is no need to change the polarity on a speaker, because when one is not working infuse, it won't distort the music. You only could have difficulty with the stereo sound. It could be a bit unclear where the sound is coming from and could sound a little less powerful.Check the speakers on a different amplifier, to hear if I'm right. Only if you switched on sound while the amp was giving full power, you could have blown the speakers, but most of the time they don't give any noise after that.
The loud " Crackling noise is you hands , moving from one place to another on the cam ! "
I too have this problem with my cam..It is Inherent,its the powerful mike they have.
Protection mode is there to prevent your receiver from overheating to the point of failure. Try this. Make sure it is ventilated real well. Put it by itself. Don't stack anything on top of it. Even if it has a fan I us a little fan behind my receiver to circulate that warm air off of it. This works real well. Make sure your receiver is setting on a nice hard surface too. Not carpet or anything shaggy like that. Receivers and amplifiers will go into protect if they are rode real hard. Keeping it as cool as you can will minimize this. You can also turn the bass and or gain down on it a bit every now and again to help it cool a little bit. That receiver has final transistors in it that get war as power increases along with the time it is increased. Keep it cool and your it will stay out of protection mode.
Does the crackling and popping sound comes only from the sub, or from the other speakers too? Try switching of to check. I think that it is problem on volume control potentiometer. In that case all the speakers must sound crackling and popping. If the problem is only in the sub you have to check its connections.
Crackling is an unusual noise but typically indicates a bad capacitor in the amplifier board. This can be a rather costly repair but first we will go through basic trouble shooting steps.
Reduce the volume on the sub and see if the noise remains and changes with the volume.
Unplug the sub and disconnect interconnect cables. With both hands push softly on the speaker cone to move it in, let it back out and do this a few times. If you hear a scraping noise and some resistance your driver is misaligned and you need to recone or replace the driver.
Check all your interconnect cables, there may be a bad internal connection (usually causes pops and cut-outs).
Let me know how things workout. If it makes the crackling noise at all volumes and the driver seems fine then I would seek a professional to repair it, or replace.
That is a common symptom of not properly grounding of negative side of the output of power amplifier section.Just resolder all component parts joint in power amp.sectiton and double the solder all negative ground.Also clean the pots of all volume controls and selector with a lighter fluid or desame that fluid so whatever sound or crackling noise eliminated and works normal again..
Hope it may help you;;
this is a speaker input pin problem, like pin is dameg or input pin is not atech proparly in computer problem is still present remove the cable and install new one cable in speaker
YOU SOUND VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE IN THIS FIELD,BUT ITS BEEN MY EXPERIENCE IN THE PAST TO START SIMPLE(@ MAYBE YOU HAVE)SOUNDS LIKE THE SAME PROBLEM MY MARANTZ HAD ,IT WAS A SIMPLE MATTER OF TAKING CONTACT CLEANER TO THE POT'S & SWITCHES.(TRY SPRAYING IT DOWN THE SHAFTS;SWITCHES ,ECT....)MY MAIN PROBLEM WAS WITH THE A-B-C SPEAKER SWITCH,MUTE & VOLUME.AFTER WORKING THEM,THE PROBLEM CLEARED UP.DUST & BUILDUP(ALOT OF TIMES FROM MINIMAL USE OR STORAGE)CONTRIBUTE TO THIS PROBLEM;ASWELL AS CORROSION OF THE CONTACTS & COILS.GIVE THIS A TRY & SEE IF IT DON'T HELP.BEST REGARDS TO YOU ALSO;HOPE THIS HELPS.THAXNX FOR USING FIX-YA(PLEASE RATE)
