When i turn my av700 on it says unable to read data from hard drive

Have you tried booting from a Windows XP CD? If you have one available you can boot from it, delete the partition and format it. Works all the time for me.

connect it to computer and try to recover it using this software: http://www.recuva.com/
remember selecting right device..
it may take hours to search the drive for deleted files..
if this does not work mail me on [email protected] and i start talking about some more advanced recovering softwares and such ..

You need to send it to a data recovery house like Drive Savers. The prices range from 500 to 3000 USD for data recovery and they can't guarantee 100 percent success. The platters need to be removed in a clean room and placed in a unit to read the data. They then copy the data to another drive or to optical disks. Unfortunately when the drive hit the floor the drive sustained physical damage hence not starting up.

Hook it to another computer do see if the drive is the issue.

is your usb lead broke, or maybe your computer is not picking it up, try opening my computer and see if you can find the hard drive, then just open it up and you will find the folders, let me know if this is any help

It only contains a laptop hard drive, so buy a new one remove all screws from either side of your av700 and replace it, dont worry cause once you open your av700 the hard drive is really simple to swap,then fire it up and format the drive you can download upgraded software from www.archos.com

That is the reason why you got IO error! that means your av700 hd may be in need to be changed.
Best thing to do is trying format again, if you cannot format again from av700 you need to remove AV700 drive and change it.

Offhand, I would suspect that the remaining files were somehow corrupted. Is it possible for you to verify those files using the external HD and a PC?

Either that or the format of the Archos AV700 was not that "clean" and would require a redo.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
