How do I find out what replacement cartridge I need for and existing moen leaking single handle shower faucet

When the Moen faucet was installed, they included a small sticker with the make and model of it for obtaining spares. You stick that somewhere under your sink like mine is :>)

If you take out the cartridge and take it to home Depot or Lowes, that keep all the spares. Lowes used to give you the parts from free.

Will a Moen 1200 replace a 12801?

The Moen 1222 is the cartridge you want. The 1222 is the OEM number, and the cartridge carries a lifetime warranty. If you call moen at 1-800-buy-moen, they will likely send you a replacement cartridge free of charge. Some wholesale plumbing suppliers will also do it if you act like you know what you are talking about, and they don't have an aversion to "retail" customers.

I am not familiar with that cartridge, but most hardware stores and plumbing supply houses should have Moen parts. #'s 1224, 1225, 1200 and 1222 are the cartridges I'm familiar with.Bring the part with you.

If this is a Moen 1225/1200 cartridge, try this link at the Moen site for instructions. You can even click on a link at the top of that site for a step-by-step Animation Enhanced turotial that is very helpful.

If it is a different cartridge, try searching that site for the specific number of your cartridge for instructions.
