Scotts Company Scotts Turf Builder Classic Drop Spreader 73730 Logo
Posted on Jun 06, 2011

I just bought a new Scott's "Classic Drop" Spreader. I owned a Scott's drop spreader before and the recommended settings on Scott's fertilizer bags always worked great. On Scott's Turfbuilder fertilizer for Spring (yellow on bag) it recommends one setting for drop spreaders which was 5 3/4. I drained an entire 14 lb bag with that setting before I was even 1/4 done with my lawn. Usually I can do my whole lawn and have some left over. I even returned the spreader to Home Depot and got another one and another bag of fertilizer and the same thing occured. I adjusted it down to 3 after a bit and still used the entire other 14 lb bag.

I am sorry that neither spreader performed as they should have. This is very concerning to us, and we would like to get more information about the spreaders, if you still have 1 the manufacture date would be most helpful to us. It sounds like you could possibly have an over-application of the product as well. If you could call us at 1-800-543-8873, we would be happy to discuss this with you. Stacey at Scotts.

What settings to use for grass seed

If you are planning to overseed or reseed your yard, it would be best to use a rotary spreader instead of a drop spreader. When spreading seed set the spreader on 2 or 3, It really depends on the square footage of your yard. If you purchased seed from a local nursery or hardware store, read the bag and it will have the correct spreader setting on the bag. If you just bought a few pounds and the clerk weighted it up for you, you probably can call and ask the clerk for the spreader setting. But I'm pretty sure setting 3 will work just fine.

If the product you are planning on applying has a spreader setting for a Scotts AccuGreen, or  specifically for the AccuGreen 3000; you can use that recommendation in your Turf Builder Classic Drop Spreader.  If they do not have a suggested spreader setting for the Accugreen, or  Accugreen 3000 settings then this question would best be answered by calling Scotts directly @ 1-800-543-8873. One of our associates would be happy to assist you further.

How do I calibrate my acugreen 1000 drop spreader?

The spreader comes already calibrated. The opening of the gate is determined by the setting that you input from the handle. This will correspond to the recommended settings provided on the fertilizer bag.

How to use Spreaders

Follow the specific spreading instructions that come with your spreader. When working with spreaders, always load a spreader on a surface where an accidental spill can be cleaned up and won't matter (driveway, walkway, etc). Common practice is to first run the spreader around the periphery of the area you are treating; this ensures a consistent application around the edge of your lawn. Next, you run the spreader back and forth within the area bounded by your first perimeter run. Always allow on overlap to avoid missed streaks or "holidays". Ideally, apply your material at half the recommended rate and make two sets of runs, first back and forth in one direction, then again another set of runs at 90 degrees to the first set. This ensures a good consistent coverage and it compensates for any uneven patches.
