I don't know the solution to the problem you are having but I wanted to point out the Windows backup is of limited use as I found to my cost when I tried to install the backup I had made from one computer onto another with a later version of Windows and found it wouldn't work. In addition the backup file couldn't be opened so I could extract the files I wanted to keep.

While the backup facility would make it easier to set up a new computer or new hard drive with the same version of the operating system, it would make more sense to just download the important documents and files on the portable hard drive so they could be transferred to a computer with a later or different operating system.

This error usually occurs because the portable drive was formatted using a newer Advanced Format with 4k sectors. The system backup tools in Windows 7 only support the older 512-byte sector format.

If your portable drive came with backup software, switching to that is usually the easiest solution. Other 3rd party backup software may also be compatible with your portable drive- I trust Acronis products, and they offer a free trial so you can see whether it will work for you.

Acronis True Image 2018 Overview

In some cases, it is possible to reformat the portable drive using an older, compatibility format. Note that you would lose any files currently stored on that drive.

More technical details about the newer formats-

you can cut and paste or just copy the media to the external hard drive. and copy it back if the data is ever lost from your computer, also you can have iTunes use the external hard drive to get media from. So you can free up valuable space on your pc's hard drive by just cut and pasting the iTunes folder to it.

It seems to be hitting a "bad" spot on the disk-drive, so that the "write" of the one block of the file never "completes". Such a "write-one-block" operation cannot be interrupted (it usually completes in a few milliseconds).

Copy all the files from the eGo onto your 'C:' drive, or "burn" onto DVD-writable disks.
Then, replace your external disk-drive, because it is "dying".
