Sears craftsman 1/2 hp garage door troubleshooting

Our garage door is not opening with the wall unit or remotes. When I push the wall unit I hear a click from the ceiling unit. The door operates fine manually. The green light on the ceiling unit (the SRT button I believe) keeps blinking periodically. The wall unit has a green light that is lit (not blinking). I've tried holding the SRT button since it appears it needs reset somehow but that hasn't worked. Any suggestions?

I'm having the same issue after a recent storm and subsequent power outage. I am leaning toward a fried circuit board, but I'm not sure how to confirm that.

  • kieljd Aug 25, 2008

Did this solution work? I am having the same problem after an intense storm. The wall unit has the green light and when it's pressed, there are 2 clicks, I press it again, no click, I press it again another 2 clicks, etc. and the wall unit opens the garage after I press it 2 - 6 times. The same applies to the keypad, remote and car intelligent unit. Recently, it is taking more than pressing the wall unit 6 times before the garage opens. It works fine manually. Help. Do I need to buy a new garage door opener? I have a craftsman 1/2 hp. Thank you

  • Anonymous Sep 01, 2008

Hello, I have the same problem. Opener is Craftsman 139.53963SRT 1/2 HP screw drive unit, bought in 2000. Motion sensors work (green led on receiver goes out when something is placed in the path). Green LED constant on wall opener. Wall opener will not operate the lights. After removing and re-applying AC, pressing wall opener once does nothing. After that, each time button is pressed, I hear 2 clicks (relay on, relay off), then the yellow light next to the reset button flashes 5 times and continues to flash 5 times. Reset button does nothing. I have replaced the RPM sensor (as recommended for 5 blinks), but no change. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Similar to above. No obstructions. Have increased down power. Have removed chain for out of phase resolution. Did see/smell smoke at one point - but motor still runs. Tried adjusting down position screw also. This all started when I was trying to program a new remote - coincidence?

I have the same problem. The light on the opener blinks eradically. Tried reprogramming the remotes, but that didn't work. When I press the wall button and the remotes I hear what sounds like a switch moving but nothing happens. The light switch on the wall unit doesn't turn the light on either, even though I can hear the switch in the unit moving.

  • David Corona Mar 14, 2009

Craftsman garagedoor opener is not working. I can hear the switch in the unit clicking but nothing moves. Door moves freely when disengaged. Tried reprogramming the remotes but that didn't work. The light swich does not turn the light on even though you can hear the switch moving in the unit up top. SRT light keeps blinking. I don't recall it doing that before.??

Did any of these solutions work for you? My garage door is doing the same thing. At first, I thought it was the sensors, but the little lights are green. It sounds like one person was able to fix it by replacing the main board. For $70, I might just buy a new opener. http://www.valleyalldoor.com/

No. Sensors are fine. Can''5th figure why power goes off when closing

  • Niela

I checked the sensors. One of the lights was blinking. I wiggled it and tried to make sure it was placed solidly, then the light stayed on steady. Then the door opened and closed fine. It was the sensor that was a bit unstable causing the door to not close.

I've got a similar problem. The green light is flashing on the unit. I can here a click when I try either the remote or wall mount switch, but no movement.

FWIW our wall switch has a lock and a light switch and I can't get the light to go on either.

The door moves freely when disconnected from the opener.

My gut tells me the logic board is fried. What I'd really like to find is some sort of trouble shooting guide - Is anyone aware of any trouble shooting information on these lifts?

I got two crafstman half horsepower door openers that are within 3 years old each. just today the second one began suffering from the same problem that the first has succumbed to. I understand how to install the units in terms of proper up and down travel lengths and down and up force, but now with the down force at maximum both door openers refuse to close and send the door back up and blink the light as if the track is seized. i release the trolley and the travel seems to be fine they operate up and down by hand as much as i want.

I don't really know anything about maintenance or proper settings of the existing counterbalance parts since i didn't install those and they have existed since the time of the garage being built in the 70's. The springs are fine though and not broken. Could it be that half horsepower just isn't enough torque and it keeps tripping on overload now that they have worn in?

should i have gotten three quarter horsepower openers?

i'm stumped.

I had a similar problem.... the light on the opener flashed a bunch of times, and it wouldn't close.... my issue turned out to be the sensor had unplugged, so once I hooked that back up, it worked just fine.

Have you checked the motor power setting? the alignment of the door sensors? something blocking the sensors?

Replacing the main board worked for me. It cost me about $70 and took 10 minutes to replace.

Got it from http://www.1stdooropeners.com/ and received next day with 30 day guarantee.

Good luck!

Programming ... press and hold the SRT button (on the drive unit) for 6 seconds until the small indicator light beside it goes out ... this clears all codes. Take the remote, press and hold the button, the indicator light on the drive will start blinking ... press and release the SRT button, the main light on the drive unit should flash once ... then you can release the button on the remote. Remote is programmed. For the keypad, type in the 4 digit code you want to use and press and hold the enter button ... indicator light on drive unit should start flashing .... press and release the SRT button ... main light flashes ... release Enter button on keypad ... done.

Be absolutely sure that nothing is in the way of the sensor. Clear of any objects for example like the tip of the handle of a snow shovel.

Craftsman Garage Door Opener won't work after storm

Check to see if the trolley (the part that slides back and forth on the rail and is connected to the door) is jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. If so, remove the bolt and run the door until it is closed. On the side of the motor unit there is an 'up limit' control. Turn this 3 turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Be sure to replace the bolt.

Garage door opening/closing problem

Could be a bad wall button or a smashed wire.
Anytime a door opens and/or closes by itself, or remotes work intermitantly I look for a smashed wire between the motor unit and the wall button or a bad wall button.

If the wire is smashed the insulation becomes so thin that power will leak thru the insulation and activate the door or interfere with the remote.

Loosen the staples with a small screwdriver and slide the wire about ½ inch to move any areas of thin insulation away from the staples.

The second thing would be a bad wall button or a remote with a sticking button.
Or a remote in someone’s purse that gets the button pushed by other stuff in the purse.

The test is to disconnect the push button wires at the power unit. If the self operation / interference stops you have located the problem. If you reconnect the wires and disconnect the wire at the wall button this will tell you if the problem is the wire or the button.

HOPE THIS HELPS
