Like mark92230 above answer#1 said these electrical motors run on bushings, therefore, these bushings need to be lubricated with a light oil, normally I use the oil called 3in1, this an oil is used for housewife sowing machine . The bushings located at the top and bottom of the electrical motor contain a felt like packing surrounding the retaining bushing which contains oil to lubricate the rotor shaft. a dried out bushing will make that noise. Do not attempt to do the repair yourself if you are not a qualified technician. To rectify the problem the motor need to be replaced if you want to repair your unit.
The motor has worn bushings making the motor shaft hot and swell and eventually seize. You can let it cool off and it will more than likely run again until it heats up again. The motor will have to be replaced if you want to repair it.
If the noise is coming from the top of the fan, it may be that the top bearing is dry. Unplug the unit before attempting access. There are two screws and a tab on the upper rear of the unit. The screws are located in the hand hold, The tab is centered just above the hand hold. Remove both screws , then take a screw driver and push in the tab. The back cover will slid downward to remove. There is a bearing on the top of the fan shaft. I used 3 in 1 oil to lubricate the bearing. Lube the bearing with oil. On the lower inside portion of the rear cover you will notice two tabs. These slide into slots in the bottom which locks it in place when it is slid upward enough to engage the top tab. When the top tab is engaged, replace the screws and the unit should be ready to run. I'm trying to locate a replacement part for this bearing. This repair lasted last year and I just did it again today. Good luck!
