I need to know whether the ethernet card for the Optiplex GX 240 is integrated in the motherboard or it is a card in itself. Thank you.

Pretty much every computer built within the last 5 years has built on network interface. However, to answer your question completely - look at the back of the computer where the network cable plugs in? Is it clustered around the video/sound, power, printer, usb, etc (integrated in); or is it located elsewhere (perhaps in the series of long narrow rectangular openings openings where the expansion cards go - separate).

Hope this helps.

It is integrated. Integrated 3C920-based 10/100 3Com® Ethernet controller. If you need drivers CLICK HERE to go to page then select support. This page shows your computer specs, support will take you to drivers. If for some reason your ethernet is not functioning you can always add an ethernet, or lan pci expansion card to your computer and use that. Almost any will do and you can get them for about $5.

My dell GX620 desktop does not power when ever I plug in the network (RJ 45) cable. Also if the system has boots to desktop, and I plug in the network cable it automatically goes off.

1) Does it have a separate Ethernet Card, or is it integrated?
(Part of the motherboard)

Reasoning?

The Dell Optiplex GX620 comes with Integrated networking.
The chipset is a Broadcom 572.
It's part of the motherboard, and you plug the Ethernet Cable into the back of the computer.

However, you could have a separate Ethernet Card, plugged into the white PCI expansion slot on the motherboard.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optiplex-GX620-SFF-Motherboard-F8101-KH290-PY423-20-Available-/370743464509?pt=Motherboards&hash=item565208523d

A) If you are using a separate Ethernet Card, replace it.

B) If you are using the Intergrated networking of the motherboard, (Plug Ethernet cable into back of computer), use an Ethernet Card instead.

White PCI slot.

You have a short circuit when you plug the Ethernet Cable into the motherboard. Don't use the motherboard networking, use an Ethernet Card.

2) Plugging an Ethernet Cable into a computer that is on, = No.
It is not a Plug N' Play item.

(Not stating this is what you are doing.
Just posting in case you are. Burns out the Ethernet chipset on the motherboard)

What ethernet card to install Dell Optiplex GX 240? one attached to mo works intermittently - loose.

You can use any brand of Ethernet card in this computer as long as it will fit in the case. If your GX240 is packaged in the small form factor case, you'll need a low-profile card. (Low-profile cards have a shorter mounting bracket than regular-size cards which won't fit this case.) For the small desktop and mini-tower cases you can use any card.

If you want to avoid having to open the case and fit a new card, consider a USB Ethernet adapter. All you need to do is plug it in to an available USB port and you're done. No opening the case and worrying about installing a card. These adapters are available at some retailers and through online vendors.

Whichever way you go, just be sure to go into the computer's BIOS settings and disable the integrated network connection.

Hope this helps. Thanks for using Fixya!

Install ethernet card optiplex gx260

That slot is actuall not accessable externaly. The open bay is for the AGP slot right next to it. Directly to the left of that slot you have a riser board the provides 2 additional horzontally mounted pci slots. You'll have to use one of these.

Can anyone tell me how to uninstall ethernet card in dell optiplex 320? I also need to know where to download and install the ethernet card. I can't go to ipconfig and see my ip address. The tech sup...

The ethernet card on the Dell Optiplex 320 is integrated into the motherboard and can not be physically removed. However, a new ethernet card could still be installed into one of the available PCI slots and can be purchased at just about any computer parts retailer.

Before you jump to replacing the card I would recommend trying a few things yourself to fix the card. Here are some suggestions:
One thing to try is disabling and then re-enabling the device through the device manager.
Another thing to try, go to the command prompt where you did the ipconfig, and type
IPCONFIG /release
then type
IPCONFIG /Renew

Those two commands have fixed many "dead" ethernet cards.
If those commands don't work and fix your problem I recommend giving this utility a try:
WinSock XP Fix
Does the computer recognize that there is an ethernet card in the system? Have you had any viruses or spyware/malware on the machine recently?
