I turned it on today and the lens came out but only numbers showed up when I tried to take a picture. I can look at my pictures already taken but the lens stays out.

Leaving the camera on and putting it where pressure is applied on the extended lens will damage the gears driving the lens mechanism in and out. There fore the problem was due to a broken gear mechanism. You need to bring it to a service/repair shop, because there are no owner serviceable parts inside and which the service guy has.If you camera is under warranty(usually 1 year) return it under the warranty and get a replacement.
Reason is lens guide pin damaged & replacing is the final solution. But before that trey these.
Hi there please follow the steps and let me know the result.
1. Ensure batteries are fully charged & clean the battery connector point in side the battery compartment.
2. Look carefully between the lens and the camera body for any sand, dirt or any damaged etc.
3. Try turning the camera with the lens facing down and shake to dislodge anything stuck
4. Try removing batteries and memory card, wait 5 minutes and refit the battery only.
5. Now turn on camera( with out card ) and see ,if working then fix the memory card & again turn on the camera. If working then fine .
Otherwise format the memory card and fix back in camera again & try. Make sure before format the memory card take a

Is the camera placed on a cold place and then taken outside a warmer place? This can cause moisture on the camera's lens. Have you tried wiping the lens already?
Also, try not to use the flash when taking the picture. This is just to test if the problem could be a flash issue.
the iris is stuck shut. try banging with the palm of your hand a few times to jar it lose. if its making crunching noise the gears are broken on lens housing. not econimcal to repair

Look at some of my posts today. This may be that the lens is off track and may be able to be pushed back by a little force as you start the camera....see my other posts on this problem.
When I turn on the camera. the lens will not extend. The screen
will not show anything but a message, " date & time are already
programmed". No menu item works. Pictures cannot be taken.
