Other than the printer just being completely broken (which is VERY likely by the sound of it) the only other thing that could explain this behavior is the computer using the wrong printer driver. Did you yourself install any drivers manually or did you just plug in the printer and Mac OS X installed everything for you?
Replacing the pickup rollers seems like a drastic first step. I would check to make sure that the paper being used is suitable for this printer and it is in good consition. You might try a different paper to see if it makes a difference.
The only solution is to take the fuser unit out of the printer, then you may be able to manually rotate the rollers to clear the jam. If there are any marks or scratches on the fuser rollers, you will need to replace the fuser unit, or you will get marks on your prints
You need to clear any paper that is jammed inside. Then if you get the message after you clear the paper, check to see if it is a fuser problem. Fuser problem: start a print from tray 1/manual feed and just as the trailing edge of paper is entering the machine; quickly open it to stop print and take out the cartridge and look at it's drum and the paper underneath. If the issue is there at that point then it would point to the cartridge. if not then the fuser. Here is the user guide, info is on page 89.

When the print
cartridge contacts are dirty and the printer cannot detect/communicate with
print cartridge.
Clean the contact points on the cartridges with a
dry, lint-free cloth.
1. Open the top cover of the printer.
2. Remove the print cartridges.
3. Clean the copper-colored contact points on the
cartridges with a damp, lint-free cloth. Use a dry, lint-free cloth to remove moisture from
the contacts.
5. Insert the cartridges back into the printer.
6. Close the top cover.
7. Try printing again.
If you still cant communicate try with new
cartridge . Hope this help. Please

We have a Xerox 6120 which is mechanically identical to the 2430. It was reporting media jams. We determined after removal and careful inspection that the fuser roller and fuser pressure roller had been damaged by what looked like someone attempting to clear a jam with a sharp object. I cannot speak re: the 2430, but the fuser in the 6120 is not a FRU. The construction of the fuser doesn't tolerate any flaws on either surface. There was more paper jammed in the fuser where we couldn't see it until we had the fuser out of the printer. We are shopping for a new printer as the repairs will cost more than we paid for the printer.
thx m8. Media jam: Fuser i had... new there was no paper jam so looked about for the sensor and found that the little arm thing that gets liffted up as the paper pass was not falling back down so it thought the paper had jamed. i just took the back panal off and put a small bit of soft foam under it so it always got pushed back up. works a treat now. thx again
