D40X: can't access menu with card in camera

Can anyone help with this? Because the manual doesn’t.

We have bought a new Nikon D40x and followed the instructions for getting started. But the problem is this:

We can’t get the menu to come up when the memory card is in the camera. All we have, with the card inserted, is the ability to take a photograph which is then displayed on the screen. Press any button and nothing happens. This means, to set anything up, you have to take the card out – then the menu and all its options appear when buttons are pressed no problem.

This can’t be right surely?. Does it sound like a duff camera or is there a really simple setting we’ve not found? Put in a new card and it says ‘nothing to display’ but take a photo (on auto or any setting) and the screen shows it – but you can’t delete it, move to the next photo, change any settings, set the flash etc. etc. (Have tried three cards; can't get to format them but they store photos; tried a reset...)

Take the card out and try and set up Folders and even when ‘enabled’ you can’t create, name or even find a folder – we thought that might make the camera recognise the card or something. The cards, by the way, are the right ones and came with the camera.

Dumfounded. What are we missing? Any help would be appreciated.

Try "Custom Settings Menu" -> "06 No memory card?".
Does it have any influence?

Since you can't get into the menu, let's try a manual reset. Remove the card and the battery...press all the buttons...leave it alone for 20 minutes...insert the card and then the battery...turn it on.

There is dust on the viewfinder of my Nikon D40x.

I'd take it to a "good' repair station for that. It may not be in the viewfinder , but on the sensor, and that is very touchy. When I bought mine, I put the zoom lens on and have never taken it off cause of dust.

How to make date and time stamp on Nikon d40x

The D40x will not timestamp the image itself.
The date and time are contained in the JPG metadata, which you can access when you look at the picture, or can imprint when getting the pictures processed.

Error message on Nikon D40X camera

Yes, This happens to me if I change the file in any way, but don't take it off of my SD card. .So if you crop it or rotate it or anything, it's changed the file and won't be able to read it the same way. If you just "move" the file (on your computer) to a file, it won't be there any more. Hope that helps...

Nikon d40x pictures wont upload

forget about the cables. The ends tend to be filmsy, and the connectors can be suspect also. Get yourself an SD single card reader. They are direct plug-in to any USB slot (no drivers or software required), and only cost about $15 US.

Nikon d40x LCD screen stopped working

Have you tried the 'Menu' button? If you've turned off 'Review' in the settings menu, the screen doesn't show anything after you take a picture. If the screen doesn't come on when you push the 'Menu' button with a charged battery installed, your camera will need to be repaired.

Mottled bright pixels appear on images

It would be very useful to see an example image. If you have an online photo sharing page (e.g. in Flickr), could you provide a link for the image?

Otherwise, one can only guess. Try formating the memory card before using it
