The DVD works fine but the VCR doesn't play, rewind or forward tape.

l would have a look inside to see if when a tape is inserted it loads and will ff and rew, if the transport that moves the tape has failed it will account for what is happening.

I've a Mitsubishi HS-U770 that has not been used for several years. When I tried to use it today, the tape loaded but would not play, rewind, or fast forward (I hear what sounds like gears slipping). The...

Mine did that, and when I opened it I found that a small drive belt (visible from the bottom with the cover removed) had deteriorated into goo. This unit had been in storage a while and the rubber just deteriorated, I guess. The trouble is that now I cant tell what size it is, or what length. I think this belt drives the mechanism that loads the tape in and out, and the rest of the mechanism is triggered by the tape cassette moving into position. Since it cant get loaded properly, the rest of the machine doesnt work right, either.

Tape Transport issue

FF and Rewind are functions of the reels, not the capstans. If the reels fail to rotate in response to capstan-driven tape motion the unit will assume a broken tape or end of tape. I think you have a mechanical reel drive system failure. Take it to a shop for evaluation and correction.

My EWC1394 records programs, but when I rewind th tape, it shuts off. This happens several times before it starts to rewind the tape.

this is caused by the tape winding too tightly so when it rewinds it gets tension and thinks it is at the end of tape ,so stops.

It pays to FF and REW several times on new or other peoples tapes to have the tape acclimatised to the tension on your machine. It may also need to be serviced if it is doing it to tapes you have previously FF to the end and rewound. Older tapes stretch a little more than new tapes so are more forgiving.

Tape won't play, FF, or eject.

sorry to say that none.no trip button for that.i assumed that the magnetic strip of the tape is already wind up inside.you'll need to open the unit up and gently rotate the flywheel of the tape player until you can open the door of the tape compartment.no need to force or it will just break.

Loud noise on rewind

You may have an idler gear wheel which has been damaged- perhaps broken/worn gear teeth or something afoul in it's drive mechanisms. Check this idler which sits down in between the supply and take-up spindles. You should be able to see this with no tape loaded. This idler should also move freely from supply to takeup- if it is sticky in movement this could be the problem. If your idler is broken, you may be able to replace it. Check with a service center- or a parts supplier. MCM electronics is one such supplier- there are others.
