Many flashguns deigned for film cameras - even really expensive ones - will not work with DSLRs.
I have a perfectly good pentax gun that cost me almost £300. It is fanstastic on my TOTR Pentax SLR but will only blat at maximum power on my Pentax DSLR. I had to spend another almost £300 to buy the new gun that will work with all the bells and whistles on my DSLR.
It looks as though Canon work theirs the same way.

Canon Speedlite 580ex ii - won't work with camera

Caroline, you should try to set the camera on "M" and the flash in 2nd curtain flash sync.

Or set flash in ATG wireless IR ETTL Slave modes and pop-up the flash on Canon EOS-70D.

Canon 550 ex speedlight - flashes okay. Won't sink with 60d (tried different cameras at dealer - same problem) Camera is okay .

Bruce,
Try these steps:
1. Set camera to manual2. Set shutter to 1/60
3. Set aperture to F5.6
4. ASA/ISO 200
5. 550EX on hotshoe
6. Do not set on slave or master
7. Turn on flash

Display must shows, ETTL.
If that doesn't work, you have to use the flash on manual.
Some of this model will not work fully on ATG Canon EOS-1D C, ATG Canon EOS-1D X IR, Canon EOS-1D X/60D/T4i because this flash is over 20 years old.

Unless you would want it to be modified by me.
But that can be costly when you can get the 580EX II for less than $425.00 USD.

I have sunpak pf30x fash unit for canon camera.but i need to use it for nikon D90.how can i do it? is ther any converter units or hot shoe unit

No. The PF30X is a dedicated unit, specifically for the particular brand of camera. A Canon unit, such as the one you have, will not work in auto mode on a Nikon camera.

Canon 5D and canon 40D are they type A or type B cameras as per 380 EX manual

Hi Bruce,
You have the latest cameras and they will work with ETTL II with Canon 430EX/550EX/580EX and 580EX II. Earlier models use ETTL and films use TTL.
Hope they are helpful.

I have a Sunpak PF30x flash and I lost my manual, is there anywhere on the internet where I can download it for free? And also what does the EV Adjust mean?

http://www.sunpak.jp/english/support/download/index.html

EV Adjust is Exposure Value Adjust. It lets you deliberately over- or under-expose the picture for effect.

Can i use my sunpak 4000af with my canon rebel t1i?

The Sunpak PZ 4000 and 5000 were made for film cameras. I have one for my EOS film cameras. It works just fine. I know this series of flashes was not made for the digital cameras. It likely will not harm your camera if the flash is designed for your camera brand. But some functions will not work.
For example, do not use a flash for Minolta on a Nikon.
You risk damaging your cameras electronics or frying the flash.
Get their PZ 20, PZ 30, PZ40 or PZ 42X for your digital camera.

I need a manual

Google this: canon 400d manual You should find a PDF file you can download. But really, that flash is pretty simple to use. Just stick the camera on automatic and it does its thing.

Sunpak PZ 4000AF for Canon EOS 35mm SLR body

Canon digital uses E-TTL metering for best flash results, the older Sunpak unit isn't compatible with this, so it is not fully compatible. It may work in manual mode - but won't be as good as a more modern compatible digital flash like the Canon or Metz (eg 58AF1 Canon) versions.
