Your alternator may be controlled by the PCM, engine computer.

  • gerry bissi May 21, 2011

The problem will not be the PCM but the wiring going beween the lalternator and the PCM. Check the condition of the connector at the alternator for corrosion and pin damage and for a broken wire near the connector. I assume the Alternator light is on. I assume you cleaned battery terminal connections too.

    From the shop manual:

    Charging System

This vehicle is equipped with a powertrain control module (PCM) controlled "smart charge" charging system. The PCM-Controlled Charging System is a system whereby the PCM determines the optimal voltage setpoint for the charging system and communicates this information to the voltage regulator. The PCM-Controlled Charging System is unique in that it has two uni-directional communication lines between the PCM and the generator/regulator. Both of these communication lines are pulse-width modulated. The GEN COM line communicates the desired setpoint from the PCM to the voltage regulator and the GEN MON line communicates the alternator load condition to the PCM. The third pin on the voltage regulator, the A circuit pin, is a dedicated battery voltage sense line.

Car won't start, even automatic locks don't work

sounds like you need to replace your battery. If you havent tried to either charge the battery or have someone jump start your car and then let it run for awhile to charge up your battery. If you have done all those and things are still not working its time to replace. If your battery is about 4-5 years old or older then you need to replace battery. Hope this helps...Rick

Windstar 2000, speedometer, odometer, gas, temp, indicators wildly go back and forth, stick at one extreme or the other, if speedometer sticks below 0, can't put into park. master cylinder switch...

same thing happens with my 2000 windstar, if you could take the instrument panel out, and unscrew the the back of the instrument panel that covers the circuit board and clean the circuit with a brush, pure bristle brush is best 'coz they're stiff and gets all the dust that accumulated on the circuit board. some dust particles contain conductive material and shorts the circuit board and cause the trouble you have, ever since i did that no more trouble. and to those who are planning of replacing your instrument panel should do this first. it'll save you money. always change your "outside air" filter
