Judging by the diagram the spring mounts under the armbrake, the Bolt (#52) goes through the circular spring. One end of the spring goes into one of the holes near the bolt on the armbrake and the other ( after providing tension by turning the spring ) must attach to a non moving part on the deck to be able to provide the required tension Look for a small turned up piece of metal with a notch in it on the housing.
Hope this helps

I have a Sears Garden Tractor with a 48" mower deck. By working in long, thick grass I broke the mower belt -- not the one that transmits power from the engine, but the belt that sits in a pulley on...

I believe that tensioner pully has to be loosend up and moved.
Here are the instructions for this.
  • Place the deck in the lowest position using the hydraulic piston (if applicable) or the manual cutting-height adjuster.

  • 2

Remove the deck-to-PTO belt from the PTO by releasing tension on the idler-arm pulley. This is a spring-loaded handle that turns in only one direction by hand and relieves the tension on the belt. Slip the deck-to-PTO belt off the PTO pulley after the tension is relieved.

  • 3

Remove the deck from underneath the mower or tractor.

  • 4

Locate any belt stops and loosen them with the ratchet wrench and proper socket. Belt stops are located on the deck and are the small metal brackets that guide and secure the belt to the pulleys so it will not jump off when under heavy use, or stretch from normal wear.

  • 5

Remove any pulley covers by removing the retaining screws using the ratchet wrench and a socket.

  • 6

Loosen the idler-pulley retaining bolt (located on the underside of the mower deck) to replace the deck-to-PTO belt. Removing the bolt is not necessary. Loosen the pulley enough to wiggle the belt free from the pulley and remove and replace the belt.

  • 7

Remove any arbor covers (if applicable) that conceal the arbor pulleys by removing the retaining screws with the ratchet wrench and a socket to replace the mower arbor belt.

  • 8

Locate the tensioner pulley on the mower arbor belt to replace it. Loosen the tensioner pulley bolt enough to slide it and release tension from the belt. Remove the belt from the arbor pulleys and replace it.

  • 9

Slide the tensioner pulley back leaving about 1/2-inch of play in the belt and tighten the bolt. Reverse the procedure to put the rest of the mower deck back together and reinstall on the mower or tractor.

One of the belts on our deck was destroyed to the point that it can't be identified. The mower is old enough that the model number isn't visible. Can anyone provide a part number? Also, one of the springs...

What you ask is impossible. You need the model number ... you don't have it ... neither will anyone else.

The best thing for you to do is take what you have to the auto parts store and see if they can match it at all.

You should probably measure the distance around all the pulleys and tensioner to get some idea of the length. If the store will cooperate, you should get a couple belts to try and return the ones that are not corrrect.

Ok Go to partdirect on the Sears website. Enter the 917. xxxxx number that will bring up the drawings and should show you were the spring goes. As for the lock nut its 9/16-18 .You should have gotten a new locknut with the new mandrel.
