The Sony portable, PSP, has media capabilities much more like an ipod. You can watch movies, play your music, show your pictures. They make it pretty easy to do this on the Sony. The games are made for slightly older users.
Nintendo's DS, or 3DS systems make it very hard to work with your media. The games are made for a wider age group including 5-6 year olds and even grandparents in the target market for many games.
Price-points are similar, but Nintendo has many more titles and software that's available in a wider range of stores.
Amazon.com shows over 8746 items when you search for all DS games and only 6405 for the PSP. obviously many are duplicates from different sources Amazon offers, but it gives you an idea of how much more is available on the DS.
You may also want to consider certain titles. I know someone who bought a PSP for a game in a particular series not available on the DS. Nintnedo will have more exclusive game franchises since they own Mario, Kirby, Pokemon, Zelda, Megaman. Make sure the games you want are on the system you buy.
The differences between these two game systems includes price, size, weight, screen configuration, different games, processing power, etc.
