Proper Settings I have a 6300 machine. I have used it only a couple of times. I find the manual hard to understand. All I want is to sew a straight stitch on ordinary cotton fabric. I need to know the best tension setting, stitch length and stich width, Also the setting on the dial on the front of the machine. I do not understand the numbers, like 2/14 and 3/17, etc. What should I set this on for a straight stitch.

It appears that your machine basically does variations of 2 stitches: straight stitch and zig-zag, plus buttonholes. Take some time to learn your machine by downloading the Workbook (Wkbk) and working through it doing the various stitches on your machine. You will eventually figure out how to combine different selections to achieve the stitches you want. The owner's manual will show you which basic settings will make which stitches.

The feed dogs under your pressure foot. Take a look. Is one side of the feed dogs worn more? If so you may need to replace your feed dogs. Just use a screwdriver and take out and order them or go to your local sewing machine repair shop and ask for some new ones.

To sew a straight stitch, you should have the stitch selector on the straight stitch, the width should be at zero, and length should be in at the halfway point on your selector.

Not much information to go on. What do you mean it won't sew a straight stitch. It just won't sew a straight line? It won't form a stitch? What?

I can't find an image clear enough to actually see the stitch selection on the front of this machine.

Does it have a stitch that looks like three or 4 straight stitches, then one zig zag, then more straight stitches? This is the stitch you want to select to do a shell tuck.

Then hold your fabric with right side up and turn edge under about 8mm and seam along the edge using this stich so that the zig zag stitch goes over the folded edge each time to the right. This should pull in the folded edge a little giving a scalloped edge.

Just do a couple of trials to work out the best position for the folded edge on the needle plate to get the effect right, probably just the edge of the normal straight stitch but it varies for each machine. If your machine does this stitch with a variable adjustment on the width of the zig zag part, then you could finesse it with this too.

Usually a walking foot is for straight forward stitching only.It keeps the many layers from shifting for you. The "hand-look" quilting takes a couple stitches forward then one back. If you look close, you will see about every other stitch is thicker and stands out more.
