Trying to boot up my sons compaq cq56107sa notebook apparently m/c was ok until my son tried to type in his password but found keypad was locked ? screen remains blank but fan is running charger plugged in. is it possible the screen is turned off...if so how do i turn it on again ? have forced m/c to restart but it is just the same.
M/c (mobile computer?)
The main battery is bad and shorted, remove it run on AC power pack, ONLY !
the HP support site, no Fixya.
shows the Long reset.
battery out, power pack unplugged, push power button for 10 to 30 seconds, and release, this resets it.
if pc latches up or goes to sleep or hibernate this resets it 3 ways , at least.
leave the main battery out,
there are many things that cause BSOD, black screens of *****,
in your case, it's more drastic if battery out does not fix it.
the PC for 7 years showed, "hit ESC to enter setup"
in text on the screen for 7 long years
if not today, then BIOS is dead, if that is dead there can be no windows.
see?
BIOS must work on demand or the screen is dead, or the PC has power issues,(power pack dead and more)
so read page 77 here,
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02657369
Hammer esc after pushing power.
hammer ESC, see BIOS wake up , and then hit f10
that is bois
the first goal of any PC repair is that BIOS>
then use a flash light.test
see page 93, see that CCLF tube, if dead the screen is dead even with a perfectly ok PC.
see that.
do the flash light trick
http://www.pcdied.com/monitors.html#flashlighttest
im replacing 2 , today, in one monitor that the tubes turned ugly yellow.
the dont last 7 years, really\ much, rare to...
the go yell, dim, blink madly or die.
that at 20,000 hours use.(READ SHORT LIVED)
The next year HP had LED back lamps. 2011. more
SOURCE: boot up problem
It is possibly the RAM it may have ceased. Look at it underneath held in by two screws. Take it out and examine it then put it back. The motherboard seems ok because you said the lights are lighting up. Sometimes the ram can stop even the bios and nothing can boot up.
SOURCE: loud fan blank screen andthe fan is lousd.
First
try by resetting the memory..
remove the memory module when powered down..and the mains switched off..there shouldn't be any light on the board...use a static band if available..if not touch the metal part of your machine to discharge static off your hand...resit the memory....if there is 2 or 3 try placing 1 at a time and rebooting....
keep me posted
And if this did fix your issue please do not forget to vote!
Cheers!
SOURCE: monitor screen stays black even though it's on
Remove the memory from your unit - power it up it should beep if full communication is still happening across your m/board. No beeps you board has died. if it beeps and your using two diffent memory modules just fitt one leave the battery out and power it up = if no display pull power swap out the memory and try again. if display occurrs you have a defective memory module - throw that failed unit away

SOURCE: I have a Compaq Presarion CQ60-249 USA notebook PC
If the screen is always and completely dark, but the laptop works on an external monitor, then you have a faulty inverter.
The inverter is the high voltage board that supplies power to the
backlight system, and it is often located at the base of the display.
If there is no picture on external display, then the prolem is often the motherboard.
SOURCE: Compaq Presario CQ45 screen remains blank... help
Open the Notebook from the back side and locate the RAM. Now remove the RAM and place it again and check, you can even try inserting the RAM in different slot if any used slot is available.
Check out.
