The mics are of two types: electrostatic(cheap and modern) and old-stiled "dynamic". Old souncards were automatically switching to the mics type. Modern soundcards have to be switched manually.
In "sound properties" you first must check in that mic is turned on, mic volume in max and in all menues avd buttons find something like "mic amplifier boost"and turn it on. It's only non-standart mic tuning option in standart systems. All other problems in defects. Soundcards can be verifyed by so:
(with maximal speaker and mic volume) many times plug in and plug out any reacheable mics and headphones to the mic connection nest (hole), and listen(or recording) resulting scratches. If scratches or other related sounds are abscend(only noise), soundcard is bad. The mic problem may be in "jack left-right interconnection". This useful thing may hang some improper cards. Also that cards often cannot work with dynamic type. And they very sensitive to a manufacturer, and model of mic.
Problem may be also in configuring multimode speaker nests in 5_1(7.1) cards like REALTEC - the mic nest may be switched to the speaker output mode. Open Realtec's control center(in control panel or quicklaunch icon) and check in mic nest to "mic mode" or switch mode from 5.1 to stereo speakers.

A tuning of the mic in XP is in 3 places"
a first one is located in "quicklaunch speaker volume icon right-bottom desktop near watch"-doubleClick-"(first left)menu PARAMETERS(or some like this)-properties(upper submenu)-recording options. Then check mic and increase it's and overall volumes.

A second: "quicklaunch speaker volume icon -"right mouse button"-sound properties-VOICE tab-recording device for mic must be your soundcard. Here is also buttons for mic's check and previous recording volume control window.

AND third: "quicklaunch speaker volume icon -"right mouse button"-sound properties-this tab(volume)-(bottom)"speakers configuration". Here is two tabs for nest's mode and sound input acceleration.

Some of this is also in Control panel-sounds and audiodevices icon.

In "quicklaunch speaker volume icon -doubleClick-"(first left)menu PARAMETERS- more properties(lower submenu): adds extra buttons to volume's window. If new button appears in mic's section, it opens mic's amplifier boost option for dynamic type of mic(or to loud a silent mic). If not, then card or driver are not supporting this type.

I have russian XP, and standart names of menues and buttons are not full correct, but you must understand.

My Logitech headphones mic won´t work with windows xp. Can hear, don´t hear me.

Your headphone mic is all right. The problem is with the sound driver you are using. Many a time the headphone jack are not properly connected so it may be another issue for not working of your headphone. Your operating system is all right check out the sound driver setting from the control panel.
Good Luck

Mic

Try a different set of headphone, if it works, then it is the headphone set.

If you get same problem with all headphones, then

If you get no sound: ensure that you have sound from speaker, if you get sound from speakers and no headphone working, then there is a problem in the headphone connection.

If you have no sound at all , not even with speakers, then check audio settings in control panel, ensure audio is not muted. If audio settings are OK, then you need to reinstall audio driver, or you have a faulty audio card.

Additionally, if it is only the mic not working then do the following:

Go to control panel and open sound and audio device.

Open volume settings and find settings for mic.

Tick off the mute option.

The mic is muted by default in Windows, that is usually the reason why it is not working.
