It sounds like a sensor problem. I recently ordered repairs on one of my Sony video cams. They had to replace the lens and the sensors, but they are also refurbishing it. When it gets back, it will be in "like new" condition and ready for many more years of quality service. The repair cost is minimal compared to replacing the cam. I recommend calling Sony Company Tech support, wade through their telephone menu-maze and talk with the camcorder repair department.
