Do you insert your card in a wrong direction.
If not, the card should be pressed in by your finger simply as you can fell there is some elastic and it will be fixed when the card go to the end.

has the lens stuck up? put it temporarily on 'M" and try to turn the focus ring. this should be freely turning;
otherwise you may want to check the camera body to lens electrical contacts (silver).. a small dab of alcohol to a q-tip.. make sure its not that wet..then try to clean the contacts.
I assume you mean Sandisk Ultra..and the answer is Yes it will work fine.
A good choice card also..
Just beware that some computers will need the SDHC reader. For example my SDHC cards can be read in XP without the reader but my Vista machines need the reader.
Hello. Make sure the write-protect switch on the SD card is in the UP (nearer to the contacts) position. Try the card in an SDHC capable reader on your computer first. Note that the SD card can only be inserted one way - make sure you're not putting it in upside-down! If the computer recognizes the presence of inserted card (whether it can read it or not), format it at FAT32. When finished, remove properly (icon in system tray) and insert into your D40 slot, WITH THE CAMERA OFF!! Turn on the D40, and if it now recognizes the SD card, FORMAT it again, in the camera. Good luck.
