I get a black streak (when making B + W copies) or a red streak (when making color copies) about 1 inch from the edge when using my HP 7410 printer's auto document feeder to make copies. I experience no problems when lifting the cover and placing the original flat on the glass to make either color or B+W copies. I am puzzled by this.

Lift the cover of the fax/scanner/copier. The glass area has 2 sections, a small section and a large section. Clean the small glass section with damp cloth. I had 3 black streaks caused by 3 black dots on that glass. I also cleaned the rollers on the ADF, but that was not the problem.
First you need to determine if it's doing from both the top and the glass.
1-assuming you are using the feeder to fax, copy or scan (the part that automatically picks up the paper) it comes out with a streak. Make a copy putting the paper on the glass and look at the copy. Does it have the streak?
2-lift the top and look to the left there should be a small 1inch glass, this is where it makes the copies from the feeder, is there a dot or white out or is the glass dirty? that's your streak, the paper is moving to make the copy,so the dot now looks like a line as opposed to making a copy on the glass it just sits there so a dot will stay a dot.
2- Clean with water or alcohol.

OMG!! thank you! you saved us from having to buy a new printer!! turns out, someone had tried to fax a piece of paper before the white-out dried...
Thank you again!
I have the same black line problem described. It only happens with the document feeder. My question is how does one get the document feeder open so that the glass can be cleaned?
