How did you lose the operating by mistake? Did you format the drive?
You can not recover the operating system from the bios. But you may have a choice when the computer boots up there may be a recovery option, you can try that. If not you would have to reinstall or try a repair from a vista disk if you can borrow one from someone. Please let me know if I can offer any other help, Thanks for using FixYa

Hi,

While using the recovery disk in your Sony VAIO laptop computer, you need to ensure lot of things. Firstly you need to disconnect all the peripheral devices that connect with your computer. Make sure that the computer is configured to boot from the CD/DVD ROM and then insert the recovery disc in the drive. Allow the system to boot from CD/DVD. You need to choose the option to recover the system without formatting your hard drive.

View the step by step instructions on the below link page. Select the Restore C drive option to perform recovery and restore computer to its factory settings.
Note: The Complete system restore option should be and can be selected only while using the recovery discs.

As you turn on the laptop, hold down the ALT button while pressing the F10 button. As long as the recovery partition hasn't been touch or been altered, it should take you into a Sony Factory Restore where you can restore your laptop back to factory defaults.
If this doesn't work then you'll need to find a windows vista cd and install the operating system. Then go to Sony's website and download the hardware drivers for your laptop. Lastly install the software you'll want to use.

Yes you can recover the OS. just try to repair it the OPERATING SYSTEM. insert the OS CD INSTALLER on the CDROM/CDRW/DVDRW DRIVE and just follow the instructions. until you can encounter wat are you going to do, either you REPAIR IT or NEW FRESH INSTALLATION, you choose REPAIR.. Operating system not found !

Your harddrive has failed or your operating system has crashed.
You will have to either run a repair disc (windows 7 installation disc or whatever Operating system you had installed on it before) or get your hands on a new installation disc and install a new operating system. Either that or take it to a computer geek in order to have them reinstall the operating system for you and hopefully, recover all of your files.

Here i getting imminent hard disk failure..How ca i fix this problem?

get a linux liveCD, boot it up. back up all of you files on to another USB or Disk using the linux operating system.
Do a system recovery with a recover disk if you have one

Ask if you need more detail or don't know what I'm talking about.

if all of that fails you have a harddrive failure which can be recovered by a professional. OR you can go on youtube and look for "how to repair harddrives" and learn to DIY

A dark screen saying disk read error occurred

This could be the result of a couple different things: 1) the hard drive has crashed and is no longer able to boot into your operating system, 2) the system folder to your operating system has been corrupted and missing the files to allow it to boot up, 3) the connector between the hard drive and the motherboard has something wrong with it and isn't allowing your computer to recognize that the hard drive is there.

Operating system not found

I would say either a bad harddrive or bad boot sector. If you are looking for a DIY solution, youll want to test the harddrive by running disk wizard or something similar or pulling the harddrive and putting it in a harddrive enclosure (available from NewEgg.com). The enclosure will hookup to another computer through usb or firewire and will allow you to backup your files if the harddrive is still good. If the harddrive isnt good, youll get errors while copying the files or it wont allow you to access the harddrive at all. Else, take it to a computer repairman to have them pull the harddrive and run tests on it.

I tried to image copy disk (with windows XP Home SP3) to another disk in my system using Norton Ghost 10. I lost windows and I am unable to boot up my computer. Is there a way for my to recover windows...

If you use the norton ghost to copy the image back?

does it even try to start up?

try turning the automatic restart on system failure off
tap f8 during startup so the advanced start menu comes up and select disable automatic restart on system failure.

Hard disk formet

Formating harddrive doesnt mean you already lost your data. It is being converted into binary file so there is possible to recover. The problem is you need to buy a data recovery to recover all the data lost in your harddrive.

I can help you but you need to buy the recovery for $99.00. Gurranted money back if the problem did not meet your requirements.
