NCr and nPr

Look your calculator in the face. Find two keys one marked nPr, the other nCr. There is third key nearby with the exclamation mark (n! or x!)
If the markings nPr, nCr,n! ARE ON THE KEYS, you do not need to press [2nd F] or [SHIFT] to access the functions.
If the markings are on the face plate of calculator you must press [2nd F] or [SHIFT] then the appropriate key.
To calculate 10P3 you enter 10, press [nPr] or [SHIFT] (nPr), enter 3 and press [= or EXE]

A Committee has 19 members, of which 10 are Democrats and 9 are Republicans. A subcommittee is going to be formed with 3 Democrats and 3 Republicans. How many possible subcommittees can be formed?

How many ways can you select 3 members out of 9 republicans: nCr (9,3)
How many ways can you select 3 members out of 10 democrats: nCr(10,3)
For each single choice of 3 reps you have 1*nCr(10,3) possible subcommittees.
Hence the total number of possible suncommittes is nCr(9,3)*nCr(10,3)
Explictitly
# of possible subcommittees is [9!/(3!*6!)]*[10!/(3!*7!)] or 10080

To calculate you can use the explict formula above or use the nCr function of your calculator

To access the nCr( function press [2nd][5] (MATH) [7:Probability][3:nCr]

You can also just type the name of the command respecting the case ( C must be upper case)

How to do nPr or nCr on TI-30x Solar (scientific calc.)

If you have an older version on the TI30x Solar (not TI30Xa or newer) then you must use a different key sequence for nPr/nCr.

52 [2nd][x/y] 5 [2nd][nCr] gives 2598960 (the x/y button is above the Pi symbol on my version).
8 [2nd][x/y] 3 [2nd][nPr] gives 336

This took me forever to find out, so hopefully it will help someone!

Binomial function

Hello,

The binomial probability distribution is defined as
P(r;p;n) =(nCr)(p^r)*(1-p)^(n-r)
where n is the number of trials, p the probability of success, and r the expected result.

Let n=20, r=7, p=0.15 ( I do not know wether this exemple has any meaning in the context of your problem, but you have to enter values that mean something to you. I am only showing you the key strokes

To enter 20C7 you press 20 [SHIFT][nCr]7 ;
To enter 0.15 to the power 7 you type 0.15[X to ] 7 the key is between
[x²] and [log]

To enter (1-0.15) to power 20-7, you type 0.85 [X to] 13
With [*] standing for multiplication key , and [X to] the raise to power key, the exemple above can be entered as

( 20 [SHIFT][nCr] 7) [*] ( 0.15 [X to] 7 ) [*] ( 0.85 [X to] 13 ) [=]

Here is a screen capture to show you what it looks like. However on this calculator the combination 20 [SHIFT][nCr] 7 is represented as nCr(20,7).
