Try replacing Battery.

You need to return it for a replacement while it is new. Try returning it to the store for a replacement first. If they won't replace it, contact Nikon. Never try to fix a brand new item. It will void the warranty.

No, you can't. You are supposed to charge the LiIon battery with the wall charger that came with the camera.

I just started having the same exact problem. I took it one step further and put the battery on a meter and it checks out at the rated 3.7 volts. Plus, the camera will not turn on. This problem is not covered in the "troubleshooting" guide of the owner's manual.

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

My Nikon MH-53 takes the same lead as my Panasonic charger so I think the problem is in your charger.
