HOW TO INSERT PICTURES FROM PICTURE PALETTE IN PAGEMAKER 7.0

You will need to upgrade to Palette 8,0 or NeXT versions that are compatible with Windows 7. I'm not sure if Palette 7 upgrade will work either. Other option, may be to get old computer with Windows XP and the right Parallel printer port with the card reader security device for Palette software to work.

A .pmd (PageMaker) document can usually be exported or "saved as" a .pdf (Picture Document Format) very easily. BUT, when you first installed PageMaker, did you also install the filter to handle that conversion?

From within PageMaker, use the "Print" option but instead of chosing a printer, choose the Adobe Distiller as your printer. If the distiller is not listed in your printers list, get your PageMaker installation disks and re-install the distiller. It should be listed under "Filters".

Open your PageMaker file, click "File" on the menu, select "Place" and browse the picture, when it's located, click "Open". Alternatively you can simply press Ctrl+D on the keyboard or you can also click the "Place" button the the tool bar as show below;


Once you click "Open", you mouse cursor will look different i.e. like a
Clip/button of a photo album, now click and drag your mouse to place/insert and adjust the size of the photo/picture.

That sounds like a problem with the source file rather than PM.
Open the image in a regular graphics program and save it under a different file name and as a JPG/JPEG format. Then try and import to PM.

Just press "cmd"and " ' " keys. The tools palette comes back. Or go to "window" menu and select "show control palette"

Pagemaker 7 will not readily allow Spell checking under Windows 7. To do this you will need to run the Pagemaker application as the Administrator. This can either be by clicking on the right hand mouse botton (right handed persons) while the cursor is on the Pagemaker launch icon either on the desktop, Windows Start up menu or Application Program launch menu and then choosing to run the Application as Administrator. Pagemake launched like this will normally allow spell checking, without  the Pagemaker application will return distionary missing or does not support spelling.
Disabling account control in Windows 7 before running the Pagemaker, which I do not recommend also achieves this in Windows 7. All the above applies for Windows Vista too!

Pagemaker to InDesign is not an exact process. You are going to have to put some work into the converted file. The important thing to maintain in PageMaker to make a clean transition, is to make sure the PM file is PRISTINE. All the links in the Links Palette are current, al fonts for the file are loaded. Delete any unused colors, just clean the file up. The more clean the file, the cleaner the transition.
No matter how clean the file is, there are going to be things you are going to HAVE to fix. You are going from an app that has not been supported for over a decade into the latest and greatest, InDesign. Be patient and be glad at least you can get the PM file into something usable instead of having to rebuild it entirely.
